in 1904, during the Russo-Japanese War, Grand Duke Cyril was on active duty when his ship was blown up at Port Arthur. He survived. The experience made him more determined than ever to have Victoria Melita as his wife.

In the summer of 1922 Grand Duke Cyril declared himself Curator of the Russian Throne.     
This was a made up title to represent Cyril's claim to the Russian throne.

In 1910 Cyril and Victoria moved to Russia, where Nicholas II recognized their marriage. Did Cyril and Victoria's marriage offend the Russian Orthodox Church as much as if offended Nicholas and Alexandra?

During the First World War, Cyril was appointed Commander of the Naval Depot of the Guards in 1915. In 1916, he achieved the rank of rear Admiral in the Imperial Navy.
