While her husband Napoleon was on campaign in Egypt in 1798, Josephine acquired a lovely château with its own park at Malmaison.

Napoleon bought some five thousand acres of surrounding land including vineyards near Malmaison.   
He improved and extended the farm buildings. He built a rotunda where meals were sometimes served at tables surrounded by flowers and plants in tubs.

In 1861, Emperor Napoleon III set up the first museum of the Consulate in Malmaison. It closed in 1870.
