I think this important anniversary, (and a 70th wedding anniversary is still quite rare,) is going to be celebrated quietly with just the family around, because of Prince Philip's health. IMO he probably would find standing or even sitting for long period's of time in dank November weather pretty debilitating if there were any outdoor celebrations. The Remembrance Day ceremony was probably tiring enough. Ditto for any dinners to which foreign royals could have been invited, though probably most will send congratulations.

The loss of longtime friends when you are very old is sad, but the couple at least have their family around them, not just descendants but also nieces like Sarah Chatto, whom the Queen is reportedly very fond of. Some of Philip's nieces and nephews from the German side of the family might come over for the anniversary. I'm sure they'll enjoy their anniversary dinner. 70 years married is quite an achievement.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's Secret to Weathering Turmoil Through 70 Years of Marriage
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's 70th Anniversary Cover Story

Curryong

If a marriage does enter temporary stormy waters it's probably nice to have different engagements each day to absorb one, quite a few residences with many rooms and huge estates outside to escape into on time off and holidays. Not to mention the Britannia to take one partner away for several months at a time.

royalanthropologist

Tell me about it :goodpost: If you are fighting in a crowded council estate house, the chances are that things are going to get pretty ugly but if it takes you days to reach certain rooms of the home; you can keep out of each other's way. Anne did just that with Mark Phillips.

Seventy years together. What an achievement! And Britain and the world has completely changed since their wedding day, but these two have just kept on keeping on. Hope they have a marvellous day. Interesting that they were photographed between the portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte who were married for 57 years, even if George was insane for the last ten of those.

royalanthropologist

They look rather sweet but I am kinda disappointed to learn about the things that the queen put up with (if the rumors are to be believed). Just goes to show that no matter how high you are, there is always someone trying to pull you down.

Great royal marriages can't be rated just by longevity IMO. Case in point: Victoria and Albert (who died prematurely).

Re: Philip's reaction to giving blessing seems to be contradicted by Crawfie's first hand account. Philip and Elizabeth wanted to get engaged in 1946. The King and Queen told them they needed to wait a year and the Princess and her sister were to join their parents on a major royal tour in 1947 (earlier). There would be a separation from Philip. Philip and Elizabeth were reported by Crawfie to be 'very unhappy and disappointed.' Elizabeth and George were not all that sold on Philip to begin with. The couple did agree to wait a year. But it was not the joyous occasion in Fall 1946 when they were told to wait.

The Duke of Edinburgh had relatives from Germany join him and The Queen at Windsor Castle this week as the couple celebrate 70 years of marriage.

On the day of their anniversary, Prince Philip was pictured carriage riding in the grounds of Windsor Castle alongside his nephew Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, and the Margrave?s brother, Prince Ludwig of Baden.

Nice that Kate is wearing loans from the Queen and from Diana's jewel box. That leaves me wondering though just how much of Diana's jewellery has been put aside for Harry's bride so she's not totally reliant on loans from the Queen (and later Camilla). Precious little probably apart from her Cartier watch and Meghan's already got that brand. Because William married years before, Kate has probably received the lion's share, IMO, as well as the engagement ring.

I've been wondering the same @Curryong so I've tried to do an inventory of Kate's jewelry that can be traced back to Diana. I've found only two pieces so far: the engagement ring and a pair of drop sapphire earrings that appear to have been modified from Diana's original pair.
http://hrhduchesskate.blogspot.com/p/jewellery.html-This was my source and it appears to be fairly accurate in regards to the Diana pieces. (Blog hasn't been updated lately, but I have yet to see any other Diana related pieces on Kate in recent years.)

So that would leave besides the watch the other substantial pieces that Charles gave to her during their marriage: ie: emerald bracelet and the sentimental pieces: gold and diamond heart necklace given after William's birth. It is my understanding that any BRF loans and gifts given from foreign heads of state were returned after the divorce.

It seems to me that there are still other pieces that were gifted to or purchased for  Diana that have not been seen in over twenty years that could be: 1. Held for Harry's wife. 2. Held for both of the brothers' wives. 3.Altered pieces-like Kate's sapphire earrings-the original earrings had two sapphire drops so some parts could still be available.  4. No longer in the brothers' possession meaning that they were sold, returned or gifted to other people.

Anyhow back to the 70th anniversary  :crazylove: and I'm hoping that there was another large family photo taken for the event.  :)When the previous photo was taken for the 60th, the grandchildren were not yet married and so we'll see a few more  family additions if a photo was taken. The only person who appears to not be present is Sophie.

Guess which two people were omitted from the Queen's guest list
Guess who the Queen omitted from her anniversary celebration guest list
Wow! I cant judge to bring girlfriend or boyfriend to HM Queen?s 70th anniversary but only family members to enter on the lists till married..

sandy

If they were engaged, she would have been there most likely. Maybe the engagement will come a few weeks after the Queen and Philip's celebrations.
