Prince Rostislav is the only descendant of the former ruling Russian Imperial dynasty to have moved back to Russia. He moved to Russia in 2009.

Spectacular photos from their wedding in this article! :Jen:

QuoteRussia today held its first royal wedding since the 1917 Bolshevik revolution toppled the Romanov monarchy, with royals from across Europe attending the lavish ceremony.

The Russian Grand Duke George Romanov, 40, announced his engagement to his long term Italian girlfriend Rebecca Bettarini, 39, after a Christmas proposal.

And today, the couple said their vows at the Saint Isaac's cathedral in the former imperial capital Saint Petersburg in the presence of dozens of royals.

The bride donned a stunning white satin gown which featured a high neck, long sleeves and a billowing skirt, as well as a glittering diamond tiara, which was designed by Chaumet, official jeweller to Empress Joséphine and Napoléon.

A tribute to the St Petersburg naval base, the piece was created to evoke the volume of a sail blown by the wind.

Hundreds of foreign guests travelled to the second city for the religious ceremony, including Queen Sofia of Spain, Prince Rudolph and Princess Tilsim of Liechtenstein, and the former king and queen of Bulgaria.

The tiara she wore was made for her. It was designed by Chaumet. The tiara is said to represent waves in honor of George's naval service.

I am surprised Prince Michael was not there, unless he was simply not spotted. He does a lot of events with Ryssian connections. And he was in Budapest a few days ago with CP Leka who is at the weddng, so he is or was on the continent.

@TudorQueen -Thank you for the links. I know very little about the surviving Romanov family and had always been curious as to how Grand Duchess Maria had become the head of the Royal House.
Definitely a good representation of royals from mostly non-reigning families, but wonderful to know that the ceremonies could be held in Russia. Maybe one day in the future, the Romanovs might have a role like the neighbors in former Eastern Bloc nations do today.

Similar to Prince Philipp of Serbia's wedding in 2017. It was the first time since 1922 that a royal wedding was held in Serbia, when his great-grandparents were married in the same church.

It seems that many of the Eastern European monarchies are slowly being given some unofficial official roles again. Romania and Serbia at the lead. It would be interesting to see if Russia is next. There have been other Russian royals who have returned to the country but for a huge wedding like this of a Romanoff there is some hope.

Maria is the contested head of the royal house. Her son will be even more as he married a commoner. Like several of the former thrones there are a few claimants.

-Grand Duchess Maria: Her great-grandfather was a son of Alexander II. The major sticking point is her mother Princess Leonida Georgievna Bagration-Mukhraneli comes from a royal house but because Georgia was annexed by Russia ther marriage's dynastic status was questioned. Her own marriage to    Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia is, but her son has now married a total commoner.

-Prince Andrew Romanoff: great grandfather was a son of Nicholas I. some think with the death of Prince Nicholas and his brother Dmitri who were head of the Romanv Family Assocation, Andrew is the rightful claimant. His claim is supported by most dynasts. His mother was Elisabetta Ruffo-Sasso dei duchi di Sasso-Ruffo dei principi di Sant' Antimo.  Unlike Maria, all three off his marriages have been to commoners, but if Maria holds that against him, then her own son's marriage is an issue.

-Prince Karl Emich of Leiningen: as far a I know he has never made a claim but there is a strong support for him being a contender.  The Monarchist party declared him the rightful heir. He and Maria are first cousins once removed. Maria's father and Karl's paternal grandmother Maria Kirilovna were the children of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia.

Another Romanov married in September, but in Paris. Rotislav is descended from the same grandson of Alexander II, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich of Russia who was a brother in law of Nicholas II (married to Alexander III's daughter Xenia). But where Maria and Karl are descended from Alexander's eldest son Andrei, Rosti as he is called, is descended from Alexander's sixth child Prince Rotislav.

The wedding was certainly a very grand one, with guests from ex royal Houses all over Europe. Wonderful for them to be there. It was certainly a very historic moment for a Romanov to be married in Russia. Lenin is probably looking from wherever he is, gnashing his teeth! I wish the best for the couple, and hope they have at least one son.

It?s true that Maria?s claim to be the heir to the throne of Russia is contested, as was her forebear?s, the Grand Duke Kirill. And really, in the cold light of day what does it all mean? I?m a history buff but as I?ve often said here, especially about the French royal claimants, when a person states they are the head of a Royal House which ruled over 100 years ago and then was ended and that country shows not the slightest interest in a Restoration, what is the point of it all?

Macrobug67

Exactly.  It is beating a dead horse.  It?s done and the Romanovs are not coming back.  Nor are the Bourbons or Hohenzollerns or Stuarts.   It?s history, it?s interesting but fighting over a non existing position is stupid

A very long (interesting article) Eldest member of the Romanov family, Prince Andrew Andreievich, dies aged 98 | Daily Mail Online

Quote
Eldest member of the Romanov family dies aged 98: How British-born Prince Andrew Andreevich spent his childhood at Frogmore Cottage before moving to US with ?600 and becoming a painter
Prince  Andrew Andreevich was the eldest member of the Romanov family
The royal was the great-great-grandson of Nicholas I, emperor of Russia
Born in  London in 1923, he grew up in Frogmore Cottage before moving to US
Lived in California where he became an artist, depicting personal memories
Went on to marry three times and had three children before his death this week

Andrew belonged to the fourth branch of the Mikhailovich line of the House of Romanov.

He was a great-great-grandson of Emperor Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna in a straight male line.

Through his grandmother, Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, he was a great-grandson of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna.

Meanwhile through his great-grandmother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, he was a great-great-great-great-grandson of King George II of Great Britain, and therefore related to the royal families of Britain, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Belgium, and Monaco.

Additionally, through the same descent, Andrew was related to the former royal families of Germany, Greece, Romania, and Serbia.

Prince Andrew Andreevich, who was the eldest member of the Romanov family, has died at the age of 98 in California
After Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh's death, Romanoff became the oldest living descendant of King Christian IX of Denmark.

Here's an update on the little family.

Their baby son is very cute, like most infants and the parents are naturally very proud. When the couple became engaged I thought it would be very wise to marry very soon if they wanted children, given their ages. However they had no trouble producing (a bit like Meghan) and hopefully they should be able to have a second as well.
