Archbishop Ernest of Saxony laid the cornerstone on May 25, 1484. He named the castle Moritzburg after Saint Maurice, the patron saint of Saxony.

The most famous resident was August the Strong (1670-1733). He was Elector of Saxony as Frederick August I.
