James I of Scotland was the son of King Robert III. James reigned as King from 1406 to 1437.
James I became sovereign at the age of eleven. He became King in exile because he had been captured by English pirates, taken to King Henry IV of England, and placed in the Tower of London.

King James I founded the Scottish Court of Session. In 1427 he defaulted on payments of his ransom and began spending large sums on Linlithgow Palace and luxuries for the court. His spending caused discontent among the nobles.
