QuoteThe Duchess of Cambridge becomes Patron of Wimbledon, taking over from The Queen

The news comes after it was announced by Buckingham Palace that The Queen would be giving up patronage of 25 organisations, including Wimbledon.

It is no surprise that Wimbledon is one of the organisations Her Majesty has stepped down from. Although she had served as patron for 64 years, she has never had a keen passion for tennis and so has visited the Wimbledon tournament just twice in the past 35 years.

Philip Brook, Chairman of The AELTC and The Championships, said: "We would like to thank Her Majesty for her long and unwavering service to The Club and The Championships during her time as our Patron.

Yesterday, The Queen relinquished patronages of 25 charities she's supported. She still has 600 organisations she acts as Patron. One charity she passed down to another member of the royal family was Action For Children. The Duchess of Cambridge is to represent this charity for the royal family, bringing the number of charities she patrons to 17.

In a press release from Action For Children, Chief Executive Tony Hawkhead thanked Her Majesty for her generous support over the last half century in a letter, writing: "The Queen has celebrated with us our greatest achievements including our Centenary in 1969 and the 150th birthday of our founder, Thomas Bowman Stephenson, in 1989."

He continued by saying: "As one of the largest children's charities in the UK we are very proud to have had Her Majesty as our Patron. More importantly, Her Majesty's tireless contribution to raising awareness of the work we do with disadvantaged children, young people and families has been priceless.

QuoteDuchess Kate receives new patronage

The Duchess of Cambridge has succeeded the Queen as the patron for Action For Children.  Kate's new position with the charity was announced following the monarch's decision to step down as head of the organisation, along with patronages with 24 other bodies.

Sir Tony Hawkhead, chief executive of Action For Children, said everyone at the charity was "thrilled" to learn Kate will be taking over the role. "It is a great honour to begin what I am sure will be a long association with a member of the royal family, with whom we already have a relationship following visits to some of our services in 2015," he said.
