I hope Sweden doesn't have to go into war anytime soon. It is important to be prepared for war if another country decides to attack them.

QuoteKing Carl XVI Gustaf attended seminar on Swedish war preparedness

His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has attended a seminar on Swedish security politics today. The seminar is organised by the organisation "People and Defence" and are regarded as Sweden's most important forum for discussions on security politics, defence and Swedish war preparedness. The seminar started on Sunday and lasts until tomorrow, but the King was present only for one day. The seminar is being conducted in the Swedish city of Sälen.

There are about 350 participants in the seminar and during the three days of the seminar will hear between 50 and 60 speeches. These speeches should either be informative about the current situation of the Swedish Armed Forces or a debate. This year's focus is the world's global security, the Swedish Armed Forces, human security and war readiness.

It is not just military participating in the seminar. In addition, politicians, civil organisations, professional organisations, the Swedish business community and representatives of several youth organisations were present along with the King at the seminar.

QuoteKing Carl XVI Gustaf attends Forest Day Conference

His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden attended yesterday "The Forest Day Conference." The Forest Day is an event created in connection with a series of seminars that will be held in the next three weeks. The seminars are a part of "The Västerbotten Weeks," a contrivance to draw attention to Västerbotten in northern Sweden. This event has been held annually in the past decade and has gained international attention. The King gave a speech at his visit to the conference, which took place at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm.

Together with Norway, Finland, Russia and Canada, it amounts to what is called the northern forest belt and has a large forest industry. Therefore, it is essential to have such forums for sharing technology and products with each other to achieve a more productive and sustainable forest management. This was one of the things that the King said he thought was very important. He has also previously devoted much time to cherishing Swedish nature and trying to convince the world to be a more environmentally friendly place. King Carl XVI Gustaf said that he was proud of Sweden's role as a forest nation. He said in his speech, "In Europe, Sweden has the vast forest land with Västerbotten as the largest forest county in our nation. Sweden has three hectares of forest per capita, while Vasterbotten has as much as 18 hectares of forest per capita.

I would love to listen to Crown Princess Victoria's speech at the Baltic Sea Conference in March of this year. She will most likely discuss how the sea is becoming more endangered and that people must take better care of it. It is unfortunate that a third of the Baltic Sea has less oxygen. I have a big interest in environmentalism & believe that it is important or people to take care of their planet and save it from climate change. It is human activities such as littering, adding carbon emissions and toxic waste dumping that worsen the quality of the atmosphere.

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria to speak at Baltic Sea conference

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will give the opening remarks at a conference regarding the future of the Baltic Sea on 6 March. This event was first reported by Elias Giertz of the Swedish newspaper, Expressen yesterday. The conference, entitled "Baltic Sea the Future," will be held at the Stockholm International Fairs.

Ulrika Näsholm, the Swedish Royal Court's Director of Information and Press Department, explained to Expressen, "By participating, the Crown Princess will highlight the importance that we must work to ensure that the Baltic Sea is a healthy sea."

Crown Princess Victoria said in a speech last year, "A third of the Baltic Sea now has so little oxygen that it is hard, even impossible, for fish to live and breathe."

The "Room for Children" is  a great way to get children to get interested in reading . Reading books and being literate is so important. Our society should value this more rather than using the iphones. I like the projects that Princess Madeleine does with the children! They admire her because she is an interactive princess.

QuotePrincess Madeleine inaugurates "Room for Children"

This morning at 11 o'clock Princess Madeleine arrived at the Southbank Centre in London to undertake her first official engagement of the year. The Princess inaugurated the "Room for Children" – a library room for children.

Princess Madeleine was asked to officially open the "Room for Children" as part of the festival "Nordic Matters" that continues throughout 2017. It was Princess Madeleine's first official engagement in London since she moved to the city after the birth of Prince Nicolas. After the inauguration ceremony, Princess Madeleine sat down and took the time to talk to children aged ten about books and reading. The "Room for Children" is filled with literature from the Nordic countries and is designed from a children's perspective. For example, books are categorised by themes like "animals" or figures. "In this way, children can easily find the books they want. It offers a course in a completely different way of being in a library, I think. It was great to see, they had done it very well." said Princess Madeleine about the special categorization of books.

Hi Louis:
What web site are you talking about?  I tried the name above and got nothing so please let me know. I love fabric and collect antique fabric or fabric that is no longer in print, so I would love to see that rug you are talking about.  And what jacket?  I saw the glasses with the ball in them.........what a great and interesting idea, agree that both are very talented and hope to see more of them in the future.

Thank you, Sherry

This was a very interesting article and much appreciated.  I think Princess Sofia looked very much like a princess and it is nice to see how much she is working on being the best wife for Prince Carl.  And that picture of Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel with the children.........how Princess Estelle has grown and what a beautiful young girl she is growing into.

Princess Sofia is doing a terrific job as a Princess. I think people should give her a chance and not judge her too quickly. Princess Estelle is so cute that I just want to hug her! She has such a lovely smile. Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel are very fortunate to have her as a daughter.

The story of how Ollie Westling donated his kidney 8 years ago to his son, Prince Daniel when he needed a transplant was particularly heartwarming. I think it was a great miracle that happened. These days, it is not common for fathers to do something special like this for their children. If I needed a organ transplant, my so called father never would've done anything like that for me. Sadly, he would've just let me die.

QuotePrince Daniel attends symposium on organ donations at Uppsala University Hospital 8 years after receiving new kidney

On Wednesday, Prince Daniel of Sweden attended a public symposium on organ donations at Uppsala University Hospital on World Kidney Day. Representatives of Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala University, and other invited guests were all in attendance. The focus of the conference was to encourage and increase organ donations. The continuing research on broadening "the criteria for organ donation" was also discussed, according to the Royal Court.

His Royal Highness told those assembled during the symposium, "I am here today and a strong reason for it is that I have experience with kidney disease and know what it means.

"So you should not be too hard on those who do not get involved. For we know that it is over 80 per cent of the Swedish people, who are willing to donate, but only 15 percent have marked it as to have signed up to [give].

Princess Sofia of Sweden visited Södertälje on Thursday 9 March to mark the official opening of the New Södertälje Hospital, which underwent extensive construction and remodelling.

After making the short trip from central Stockholm, Princess Sofia was received at the hospital – now one of the foremost modern healthcare facilities in Sweden – by president of the hospital, Mikael Runsiö and fiscal County Commissioner Irene Svenonius.

QuoteKing and Queen of Sweden to visit Indonesia

Today the Swedish Royal Court announced that His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia would make an official state visit to Indonesia. The state visit will take place between 22 and 24 of May at the invitation of the nation's president, Joko Widodo.

The press release from the Swedish Royal Court says they hope this visit will strengthen political, economic and cultural relations between the Swedish kingdom and Indonesia. Trade and innovation will be the main theme of the tour. With 250 million inhabitants, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous nation and the third largest democracy. There is, therefore, high potential to increase Swedish exports to this country, it says in the press release. Exact details of the state visit's agenda have not yet been released, but it is believed that the tour will include public receptions and meetings with the political leadership in the country. It is also highly likely that the King and Queen will see Indonesian culture and various tourist attractions.

QuoteKing Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia begin their official visit to Brazil

Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden will, this spring, conduct two longer trips abroad. In May they will travel to Indonesia on an official state visit, but today, they begin a visit to Brazil. Queen Silvia is half Brazilian through her mother. As a result, Brazil holds a special place in the heart of the Swedish Royal Family. Her Majesty lived much of her childhood in the South American nation and part of her humanitarian organisation the World Childhood Foundation has a base in Brazil.

The official programme begins today. The visit starts in São Paulo, and His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf will attend the conference "Brazil-Sweden Business Leaders Forum" which aims to gather business leaders from both Sweden and Brazil to discuss partnerships and increasing the volume of trade between the two nations. However, Queen Silvia has no official engagements scheduled for today.

On Tuesday, the King and Queen, together with the Brazil's President Michel Temer and his wife, Marcela, will be present at an event organised by the Global Child Forum. Later that day, Their Majesties will have lunch with the Temer and the First Lady before Queen Silvia travels solo to participate in conversations associated with the care of older people and individuals who have a dementia-related disease.

I like how Crown Princess Victoria volunteered to be the meteorologist for the day at the SVT studios. She interacts well with people and enjoys her job as a royal.  Where's Prince Daniel? He visited the SVT studios as well, but he is not in any of the pictures.

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visit Sveriges Television

Yesterday, Their Royal Highnesses Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden made an unannounced visit to Sveriges Television (SVT) at Gärdet in Stockholm. The royal couple visited both the newsroom and the children's channel area. They were shown around the studios by SVT's CEO, Hanna Stjärne.

Victoria and Daniel were given information about the future work and challenges for SVT from Stjärne, the Royal Court's Director of the Information and Press Department, Margareta Thorgren told Svenskdam yesterday. They spoke with the documentary editor for the channel, and the couple also learned about the 2017 Christmas calendar called "Raiders of Time Crystal."

At one point, the Crown Princess even got to step in as meteorologist on the green screen. She and Prince Daniel then went to the set of a popular Swedish children's show, where Victoria hugged and danced with Bolibompa Dragon. The head of SVT, Catarina Wilson, later called it a "precious moment" and told Expressen that the dragon "always likes to meet new people."

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria's visit to Japan – day 1

Yesterday, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden started her visit to Japan. Her Royal Highness's solo-visit will last from 18 through 21 April. Prince Daniel will remain in Sweden to care for their two children, five-year-old Princess Estelle and one-year-old Prince Oscar. Crown Princess Victoria began her visit in Tokyo with a lunch together with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan before she attended a meeting at the Royal Swedish Embassy in Tokyo where the subject of the conversation was Japan's efforts on sustainability issues.

Since the Crown Princess will be away for several days from her young children, she thought it was important to spend some quality time with them on Easter before she went to Japan. Victoria had no public events planned except for the memorial service held at City Hall in honour of the victims of the terror attack in Stockholm, the week before Easter.

Last weekend she and her family were spotted walking in the park around Haga Palace. She was spotted by a tourist who quickly arrived with his camera; the Crown Princess greeted him cheerfully. In the picture, you can see Crown Princess Victoria transporting little Oscar in the stroller while Daniel gives a helping hand to Estelle who is currently learning to ride a bike.

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria's visit to Japan – Day 2

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden continues her visit to Japan. The Crown Princess has done many tasks and has a busy programme during the four days she is in the country. On Tuesday, she had lunch with the Emperor and Empress of Japan. She also attended several meetings at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo and a dinner that same evening.

Her Royal Highness's second day in Tokyo began with a visit to the Aeon supermarket. This supermarket is a part of Japan's leading retail group, which among other things operates malls, department stores, supermarkets and pharmacies. The supermarket is one of Japan's key actors in sustainable fishing, and they are actively working to integrate sustainability aspects into their purchasing policies for fish and shellfish.

After visiting the supermarket, the Crown Princess spend the afternoon participating in a seminar on the UN Global Sustainability Goal, organised by UN University in Tokyo. The theme of the symposium was the promotion of the UN's global sustainability goals with a particular focus on sustainable seas. During the seminar, Her Royal Highness held a speech and said: "We all have a moral obligation to act in accordance with our best understanding. And right now, that means doing everything we can to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda. This is not only our obligation; it is our only option."

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria's visit to Japan – Day 3

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden continued her visit to Japan yesterday. The Crown Princess has had many engagements with her busy programme during the four days she has been in the country. On Tuesday, she had lunch with the Emperor and Empress of Japan. She also attended several meetings at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo and a dinner that same evening. On Wednesday, Her Royal Highness participated in a seminar on the UN Global Sustainability Goals and visited a supermarket before eating dinner with Her Royal Highness Princess Takamado of Japan.

Yesterday, the Crown Princess started her day by visiting the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. Tsukiji Market is the largest fish and shellfish retail market in the world. The Swedish Royal Court posted a video of this on their Instagram account, which can be seen embedded above. Crown Princess Victoria went on to visit the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, where she met the winners of the video competition organised by the embassy. The competition was primarily for young people and teachers, and the subject was the UN's Global Sustainability Goal No. 14.

There, Her Royal Highness met the human robot named Pepper. Pepper is a humanoid robot built to resemble the human body, and through a computer system, it gets artificial intelligence and can think, reason and understand information. After lunch, the Crown Princess visited the Hama Rikyu Gardens, a traditional Japanese garden and public park located at the mouth of the Sumida River. The park is surrounded by the sea water from the Gulf of Tokyo.

It would be nice to see pictures of Crown Princess Victoria's trip to Japan. I think she received very little attention from the media outlets because she isn't a British royal. They seem to be primarily interested in the British Royal Family. I think it is sad because there are other interesting royal families to report news about.

@Jennifer-I completely agree with you that English language press coverage rarely covers the other royals. The DM is one of the few that will but it's primary focus is on the clothing of Queens Maxima, Letizia, Rania, Mathilde, CP Victoria and CP Mary.

I agree, @TLLK . The English language press usually focuses on the coverage of the British Royal Family and not on the other royal families. DailyMail is one of the few websites that reports news about different royal families. I also think they focus too much on their fashion and make unnecessary jokes about them rather than focusing their duties. In my opinion, Hello Magazine and RoyalCentral are more professional websites that report the news about royals around the world.

QuoteQueen Silvia travels to Portugal to open new wing of department for elderly

Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden was in Madeira, Portugal, yesterday to open a new department for the elderly in the Hospice Princesa Dona Maria Amélia which will accommodate up to 40 senior citizens. The area also contains a school, nursery and preschool. Madeira is an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean south-west of Portugal.

The Queen told those assembled, "To give our elderly the best possible care and care is an issue that is very close to my heart. The desire to take care of those who once took care of us is a universal driving force that unites us, no matter where we live and work. And I'm convinced that we have to make every effort to learn from each other."

The Chief Financial Officer of the Swedish Royal Court, Jan Lindman, said that the Royal Family entirely financed the new addition and has funded it in the past, as well. Some in Sweden have complained about their tax dollars going toward a Portuguese hospice. However, the Chief Financial Officer explained that the funds given to the Hospice Princesa Dona Maria Amélia were not from the money given to the Swedish Royal Family by the Swedish government.

Sweden?s King and Queen visit snowy Kiruna ? Royal Central (http://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/swedens-king-and-queen-visit-snowy-kiruna-95264)

Quoteheir Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden visited the city of Kiruna ? the northernmost town in Sweden ? this week to see the progress being made with the world?s largest city reconstruction project which will see the municipality?s centre moved three kilometres to the east.

The project officially began in November 2007 in response to a 2004 study which revealed that a mining-related subsidence was putting the city at risk, and the relocation project officially got underway in 2014.

The royal visit began at Kiruna Town Hall where the King and Queen met with municipal council chairperson Kristina Zakrisson and Urban planner G?ran Cars to learn more about the ongoing city conversion. They also heard from LKAB CEO Jan Mostr?m and Director of Social Transformation Stefan H?m?l?inen about the company?s role in the urban transformation as LKAB produced the original study which proved the necessity of the reconstruction project.

Estelle and Oscar look very sweet, love the photos of them. However, I've always questioned as to why the Swedish Royals celebrate their national day with the females of the family getting all dressed up with white headdresses, yellow aprons, long skirts, traditional shoes and all the rest of it while their menfolk wear dark suits. They are all Dukes of a particular region, with the exception of Chris. Why can't they wear regional or national traditional male folk costumes?

British royals don't celebrate any national day because the history of the U.K. is very different from countries in Scandinavia or continental Europe. Scotland and England have been in Union since the early 17th century. Therefore, as well as celebrating St George's Day in England and St David's day in the Principality of Wales, (in Welsh national costume) the BRF would have to wear Scottish national dress (that, like the Welsh, would be contentious to say the least) and go up to Edinburgh to celebrate St Andrews Day, (or Robbie Burns Day which is just as prominent.)

Then, what would they do about Northern Ireland, which is part of the U.K.? Go to Belfast for St Patrick's Day, which would please Roman Catholics and then return for Orange Day commemorations of the Battle of the Boyne for the Protestants? Rather complicated, to say the least!

@Curryong_ I've read over at the big forum that the "national costume" with the blue/yellow/white was developed for a unified look for the country instead of the regional costumes. I'm surprised that the adult men do not have their own version to wear like their Norwegian neighbors. (My guess is that the King doesn't like it. ) I do remember that I  saw Princess Sofia wear her regional costume at her son's christening.

Yes, I remember that too. But Carl Philip wore a suit, and that's the point isn't it? The male royals wear military uniforms to honour their country's armed forces but don't bother with the folk costumes of their native land, perhaps because they might 'look stupid'.

Nobel banquet in Stockholm cancelled due to COVID-19 ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/sweden/nobel-banquet-in-stockholm-cancelled-due-to-covid-19-146277/) Honestly I  would have been stunned if it had been allowed to occur.

QuoteOne of the Swedish Royal Family?s most prominent events has been cancelled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The traditional banquet for the Nobel Laureates in Stockholm?s City Hall will not take place this year because it requires over a thousand people in a small area which is not advisable during the current pandemic. The Swedish Royal Family always attends in all their royal jewels to celebrate the laureates.

The Nobel Foundation said in a press release this week: ?The Nobel Foundation?s Board of Directors has decided that the traditional Nobel Banquet at the Stockholm City Hall will not take place this year. Both the Nobel Banquet and the reception hosted by the Nobel Foundation and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at the Nordic Museum on the day before bring together over a thousand people in a limited indoor space. So it is unreasonable to hold these events in 2020.?

Without a doubt, this needed to be cancelled.  It can still be held - the ceremony at least - but on line.  Videos of the winners.  Actually, if they got creative, it could be much more interesting for the rest of us.  They could make videos of each winners works, explain in more detail what they are doing etc.  It would be more interesting and promoting the winners than the banquet.  Quite frankly, I find the banquet to be a promotion and discussion more of the fashion than the winners.

Crown Princess Victoria puts focus on sustainable tourism ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/sweden/crown-princess-victoria-puts-focus-on-sustainable-tourism-155116/) We had the opportunity to visit Stockholm on our Baltic cruise in summer 2018. Honestly, while I was thrilled to see the recovered and preserved 18th century ship The Vasa and the sites, it was one of my least favorite stops due to the incredibly high number of tour groups that crowd the city's shoreline. With so many people (like my family) choosing to cruise, it can be very overwhelming. We always try to get away from the groups to do our own thing, but sometimes it's impossible.

QuoteCrown Princess Victoria of Sweden has attended the EU project DUNC?s digital conference. From her home-office at Haga castle Her Royal Highness gave a speech and closely followed the final day of this conference.

Development of UNESCO Natural and Cultural Assets, also known as DUNC, is an EU-funded collaborative project where the Swedish municipality of Karlskrona municipality has been essential. For three years, the project has worked to increase the commitment to sustainable tourism, as well as strengthen the local business community, at four world heritage sites around the southern part of the Baltic Sea.

In her message for the final day of the conference on January 26th, Her Royal Highness said: ?As an alumni ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals, the future of the ocean, and the Baltic Sea in particular, is a topic very close to my heart. I believe the DUNC project is a great example of how we can come together, around the Baltic, to address the challenges we have in common. And I look very much forward to hearing more about the achievements that have been made over the past three years.?

In January 2016, the Crown Princess was appointed by the then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as one of 17 ambassadors for work on the UN?s global sustainability goals. The ambassadors? task is to promote in various ways the UN?s goals for sustainable development, Agenda 2030. From 2019, the Crown Princess has been included in the alumni group. As an alumni, the Crown Princess continues to focus in particular on sustainability, maritime and fisheries issues.

The royals in Denmark and Norway have also been deeply involved in sustainable development. In October last year, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark attended the World Hour in Copenhagen, an event that teaches young people about the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Crown Prince Haakon has for many years been a goodwill ambassador for the UN Development Program UNDP.

Princess Sofia attends digital graduation ceremony for Sophiahemmet University ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/sweden/princess-sofia-attends-digital-graduation-ceremony-for-sophiahemmet-university-155540/)

QuoteSweden?s Princess Sofia attended the digital graduation ceremony for Sophiahemmet University on Friday, 5 February. The heavily pregnant Princess delivered remarks to congratulate the graduates during the online ceremony.

The ceremony is usually held at Stockholm?s City Hall in the Blue Hall but the current health crisis made that impossible this year.

Princess Sofia spoke about the symbolism in the uniform of Sophiahemmet ? a white hat and black dress with lace. The white represents the light in life while the black symbolises life?s seriousness. The lace represents the joy in life.

?The light in life may symbolise the important effort you make and the opportunity for trust and security that you will give so many people. The seriousness of life may symbolise the tragedy and sorrow and sometimes frustration you will face.

?And then the joy of life ? which is probably one of the reasons why you have spent years of your life on this particular education. To be able to be of service and help, to be able to contribute and to be part of society?s most important functions,? she said.

Her Royal Highness went on to add: ?During your professional life you will meet people at all stages of life. You will be in situations of deepest sorrow and greatest joy. You will meet people who are both strong and fragile ? sometimes, both at the same time.

 I'm so very happy to see these types of ceremonial events again. The Dutch will hold their opening of parliament next week. Per tradition the royals in attendance wear black and white. This is the contemporary version of the old court dress that was the tradition up until 1974 when the protocol was changed.

Here's the current king's mother Princess Sybilla and his sister Princess Christina wearing the old court dress to the opening of parliament.

Royal Outfit of the Day: March 21
Princess Sibylla, late mother of the King of Sweden, in traditional Swedish court dress for portraits and the formal opening of parliament (center).
A bit of a flashback today, relevant to us for two reasons: 1. This is fabulous, and 2. Tiara intrigue!

1. This is fabulous, plain and simple. What Princess Sibylla is wearing here is one of the Swedish forms of court dress, a formal uniform of sorts that existed for Swedish royal ladies to use on important occasions. They came in a few different versions; this particular one, suited to Sibylla's high place in the royal family, includes a dark gown with exaggerated sleeves and a train, all trimmed in ermine in worn with a veil and tiara. You might recognize this sort of dress first from the similar gowns used at court in imperial Russia, but outfits like this can be spotted on Bernadotte ladies going back many generations. They were kept in use for the opening of parliament in Sweden up until 1974 - not that long ago, when you consider how long this sort of grand gown has been out of fashion. After 1974, changes were made to the actual ceremony involved with the parliament opening, and these gowns no longer had a place. For the same event today they wear modern dress but in a black and white dress code that serves as a faint call back. And if you look closely at gala events, you will see Queen Silvia's attendants still in dark gowns with lattice work on the short sleeves, a form of these court dresses. The oh-so-royal version with train is retired, and would probably be labeled as out of touch if it were used for an event today...but I'd so love to see it resurrected for a portrait someday. It is the height of royal splendor, and shouldn't be forgotten

The King and Queen were also shown part of the exhibition that the Malm? Fair is hosting in connection with the forum: one about artist Ceija Strojka, a Holocaust survivor, and another one containing pieces directly from World War II.

The forum?s discussions were centered around four main topics: remembrance of the Holocaust, education on the topic, the fight against anti-semitism and other forms of racism, and the concerning rise of anti-semitism on social media over the past few years.

QuoteThe political arena in Sweden has been quite chaotic over the past several months, but they now have a new government with a woman at the helm.

The Change of Government Council was held with King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The council was also attended by Crown Princess Victoria, the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament and the incoming new Swedish government.

The King began the council by delivering a short speech, in which he said: ?Mr President, and ? for the first time ? Madam Prime Minister, future Minister of State. Welcome. For almost three weeks, the Speaker has led the work of appointing a new form of government, after which the Riksdag has approved the Speaker?s proposal. Following a parliamentary process in accordance with our constitution, a new government will take office today in the Council Chamber at the Royal Palace. And you, Madam Prime Minister, will be the 34th holder of the post of Prime Minister since it was introduced during the time of my great-great-grandfather King Oscar II. With this, I declare this council open and hand over the floor to the President.?

The President then formally reported to the King and Crown Princess on how the government was formed, while His Majesty, as a matter of protocol, stated that a change of government had taken place.

After the public and televised part of the council, the President left the meeting. King Carl XVI Gustaf, Crown Princess Victoria and the newly appointed government remained at the Royal Palace for the new government?s first ordinary state council.

The Swedish royal family joined in with government officials for a scaled back Nobel Prize Ceremony at the Stockholm City Hall. Typically this is a gala banquet event with the ladies in full tiaras and orders, but this is a more subdued event tonight.

Swedish royals attend scaled-back Nobel Prize ceremony ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/sweden/swedish-royals-attend-scaled-back-nobel-prize-ceremony-169672/)

QuoteMembers of the Swedish Royal Family have attended a scaled-back Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm.

King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel attended the event in the Blue Hall at Stockholm City Hall without the traditional gala attire. The ceremony was scaled-back again this year due to the global health situation.

Usually, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia and Princess Madeleine attend the Nobel Prize ceremony and events surrounding it, but due to the adaptation for health reasons, only the King, Queen and Crown Princess Couple were in attendance.

The ceremony was held in person and online. Prize winners spoke in the hall and via video recording when accepting their prizes in their home countries. This year the Nobel Prizes were handed out to those in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Quote

Last week it was announced that the King and Queen of Sweden were infected with Covid-19. Shortly afterwards, it was announced that Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were also infected for the second time during the pandemic. Therefore, the majority of the Swedish royal family had to change their calendar drastically.

The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel were scheduled to attend a concert on Monday evening. However, the Crown Princess? little brother, Prince Carl Philip, had to step in for his older sister. With him was his wife, Princess Sofia.

Princess Sofia had not been seen publicly for 38 days when she appeared Monday evening. The last time she had an official assignment was on December 3, and the big gap is not the norm for the hard-working princess. However, she has been on maternity leave with her child Prince Julian, who is now nine months old.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia attended the performance ?Celebrate democracy ? 100 years? in the Annexet concert hall, where the Swedish Parliament celebrated 100 years since the first women took their seats in the Swedish Parliament.

The performance showed the path to democracy in Sweden, and it was broadcast live on Sweden?s largest TV channel, SVT.

QuoteThe Swedish royal family has already showed its support for people in Ukraine following the Russian invasion with both direct messages and an increased focus on how Sweden must react and change as a neutral state in Europe. As the conflict continues, the King and Queen of Sweden led their family in a day of focus on supporting those affected by the invasion.

I believe that at this point in time that most of the European reigning royals have sent one or more members to visit a refugee center in their country. Even the non-reigning royals ie Romanian are staying informed during this stressful time.

QuoteThe war in Ukraine has forced millions of people to flee their homes. While most have travelled to neighbouring countries such as Poland, Romania and Moldova, refugees are now beginning to arrive in European nations further away from the war, including Sweden.

On March 22nd 2022, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia visited Nyn?shamn to talk to authorities and volunteers working to receive Ukrainian refugees.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia began their visit by talking to representatives of Nyn?shamn municipality. They heard that 200-300 Ukrainian refugees arrive in Nyn?shamn daily via ferries from Poland. Many of the refugees continue to travel, but the municipality is responsible, on behalf of the Swedish Migration Board, for coordinating the reception for those who choose to stay in the municipality.

This job involves, for example, opening up so-called evacuation accommodation and collaborating on issues relating to crisis support, vaccination and other needs for care interventions. The municipality also works to be able to receive newly arrived children and young people from Ukraine in the municipality?s schools.

Yes, the Dutch monarchs and heirs have certainly been more generous in terms of godparentage to other royals than have the BRF?s for example. As has CPss Victoria of Sweden of course.

Back on my high horse again about the BRF virtually separating themselves from other royals since the Second World War but it?s true. It was really noticeable during the late Queen?s reign and that of her father (and son) and I think a real opportunity has been lost. It?s always been attributed to the QM?s influence and I wouldn?t be surprised, actually.

QuoteKing Carl XVI Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden have attended a change of government council was held at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

The King ceremoniously declared the change of government complete at the special meeting at the Royal Palace on October 18th 2022. During the historic meeting with the new government, the Parliament President introduced to the royals the new Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, from the Conservative Party.

The Prime Minister then presented his new ministers to the King and Crown Princess at the ceremony. The new prime minister leads the first liberal-conservative government in Sweden in eight years.

The Swedish monarch also gave a speech in which he humorously said: ?Both governments and rulers come and go. Although with slightly different lengths of intervals. Something that remains, however, is the Swedish democracy, where citizens have enjoyed equal rights and universal voting rights for more than a century.?

The Swedish King continued: ?Unfortunately, we don?t have to look that far into the world to see that democracy is not a matter of course, but something that must be protected. Every day. Today, October 18, 2022, a new government for Sweden takes office. This takes place after a parliamentary election that was free, secret and direct, in accordance with the constitution. This adds yet another link to the chain that is the history of Swedish democracy.?

The move will allow Princess Madeleine's children to remain in the line of succession.

The rules in Sweden are that children must be educated in Sweden to be in the line of succession.

In 2019, Fredrik Wers'll, Marshal of the Realm, confirmed Princess Madeleine had been given a bit of leeway on her children living & attend school abroad. But couldn't address if the children would lose their place in the line of succession in the future if they did all their education outside of Sweden.

Good point @wannable. Regarding the family's return to Sweden, I have to wonder if KCG's recent health issues and the fact that her parents are aging, has prompted them to return to Sweden. In his speech, Prince Carl Philip said: ?We are all different. Our differences are our strengths. I think everyone here today agrees. We know that there is great potential in letting our differences be our strengths and that this should be the obvious norm. Everyone feels good about being given the conditions to be exactly who they are. Even though we know this, there are many people who feel that they are not given the right conditions, who on the contrary experience stigmatization.?

QuoteSurvey: The King has done his thing - time for the Crown Princess to take over
The majority of Swedes think that the King has handled his office well, but that it is now time to hand over to Crown Princess Victoria. That is the opinion of a majority of those who answered a survey that Dagens Nyheter had Ipsos conduct.
- The King's time on the throne is running out, if you listen to the voters. There is a clear shift in public opinion, says Nicklas K?llebring, opinion analyst at Ipsos.
This is said to be the first time a majority wants to see Victoria on the throne. 43 % believe the King should step down, 38 % want him to stay. 64 % believe that the King did a good job during his time on the throne, only 25 % think the opposite.
Monarchy as a form of government also has strong support. 62 % believe it should be kept, while 25 % believe it should be abolished.
The survey is based on 1,291 interviews, conducted in August.

Yes, It?s a bit odd that it wasn?t mentioned what they actually saw considering the SRF and guests all spent at least a couple of hours doing so. I expect it was one of the lighter opera bouffes anyway.

As for the polling, it?s what?s most observers expected I think. There?s hardly any republican movement in any of the Scandi kingdoms, and Victoria has always been very much admired. The Swedes did have a succession of long lived male monarchs for a long time and I don?t think they want a similar situation to Charles. Can?t see King CG abdicating though.

Is it wrong of me to secretly hope for an ascension ceremony in the next ten years from the trio of Scandinavian monarchies? Hopefully due to a voluntary abdication. I'd like to see Margrethe and especially Harald enjoy some retirement years while their heirs take over in their fifties. The Swedish public would like to see an abdication in their nation too, so Victoria can ascend.

No, it?s not wrong. I think Beatrix and Albert and JC did exactly the right thing, even if it was for very different reasons. I just feel that a succession of extremely old monarchs with heirs who grow past middle age while waiting doesn?t do any country any good.

The UK was fortunate that until PP?s death the Queen was sharp mentally and not too bad physically, but how often does that happen and afterwards there was an obvious frailty. Probably King Harald is very worried that Pss I-A will be pushed into royal duties earlier than she should be, especially with MM?s health, but he has himself been regularly hospitalised for several years. However he, Margarethe and King C-G should take a leaf from Beatrix?s book not the late British Queen?s, imo.

^^^I agree. Right now CG appears to be one of the healthier older monarchs in the world, but it's clear that Margrethe and Harald are struggling as they age. I believe that both are mentally fit, but time is taking its toll on their health.

I'm very glad that Beatrix, Albert and Juan Carlos had chosen to step down for various reasons. Beatrix seems to be the physically fit of those three, but Albert and JC are clearly having issues too.

It?s well known that King Gustav VI Adolf was absolutely mad about archeology and became something of an expert. Both he and his wife leaned towards Germany before and during WW1. As Kaiser Wilhelm II was also a keen archeologist through much of his adult life this bond may have tied the two rulers together even more, perhaps. In general the Kaiser, who was inclined to try and take charge at extended family get-togethers and appears to have been none too popular with other royals, especially relatives. But not so with the Swedish King and Queen.
