QuoteAmbassador said no to Obama to dine with Danish queen

Rufus Gifford, the US ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, faced a rare choice. He had to decide whether he would attend President Obama's official farewell dinner in the United States or attend the traditional Danish New Year Banquet (Danish: Nytårstaffel) with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The choice was not difficult for the ambassador, who met up with Queen Margrethe yesterday.

Ambassador Rufus Gifford told Danish press that it was a bit difficult to be present at both events, as they were on the same day. Also, American Stephen De Vincent was invited to both dinners, and he also said yes to Queen Margrethe's invitation and declined to dine with Obama. This was also the very last opportunity for the US Ambassador to attend a royal event in Denmark since his time as America's ambassador to the small Nordic kingdom will come to an end when President-elect Trump takes office on 20 January; however, Trump could choose to keep Gifford at his post.

Ambassador Gifford said it was a strange feeling and very sad to know that this was the last Danish New Year banquet he would attend. He told Danish media yesterday that he would miss it. Next year, Queen Margrethe must prepare to invite President Donald Trump's appointed United States Ambassador to Denmark.

QuotePrincess Mary glitters at annual New Year ball

PRINCESS Mary uses the annual royal New Year's Banquet to showcase her impeccable style and this year was no exception.

Arriving at the banquet held at Amalienborg Palace, the future Queen of Denmark made her entrance on the arm of her husband Crown Prince Frederick wearing a gold dress with a plum cape.

As she has in past years, she wore a diamond and ruby-encrusted tiara and around her neck was her Knight of the Order of the Elephant collar.

I like how Crown Princess Mary and Mikkel Hansen are using sports as a way to combat bullying.  It is true that strong unity & good children's communities can stop exclusion and bullying.  The children will feel happy if they played a game of handball, basketball or hockey together and not feel isolated or alone. I think that Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia would've loved to join them in this because they are also working on plans for their anti-bullying campaign.

QuoteCrown Princess Mary of Denmark launched a new programme through The Mary Foundation to combat bullying called Antibulli at the Vestergade Hall in Silkeborg, Denmark. This new campaign launched in coordination with MH24 – an anti-bullying organisation by Danish handball player Mikkel Hansen – and aims to help children between the ages of six and 12-years-old.

Antibulli had a trial run last year and officially opened on 7 January.

Mikkel Hansen was at the launch and took part in some of the exercises alongside the Crown Princess. This programme will use sports as a way to fight against bullying. Mary and Mikkel took part in the handball exercise during the day with a group of children.

It seems that with the advent of social media there is an increased awareness in the different forms of bullying. Glad to see that so many public figures including royals are doing their best to put the spotlight on this issue.

QuotePrince Henrik opens exhibition of his own work

On Saturday morning, 21 January, Prince Henrik opened an exhibition of his own work at the museum, Koldinghus. The exhibit is entitled "Heaven Stone: HRH Prince Henrik collection of oriental jade art." It contains more than 10,000 pieces from his personal collection housed at his homes of Fredensborg Palace, Amalienborg and the Château de Cayx in France.

In a press release by the Royal Danish House, His Royal Highness said, "It's a joy to be able to share my fascination with oriental jade art with audiences who visit the exhibition at Koldinghus. The collection has been for many years, and I look forward to seeing the new framework at the Museum at Koldinghus.

"Not only are there many memories and good experiences associated with each object, but I am also fascinated by the material's historical symbolism, its nature, forms and not least the wonderful colors and textures as jadestone may contain."

What a busy little bee Prince Henrik is! Unfortunately for his wife's sake he is much less busy than he used to be before he resigned from being Prince Consort. I've always found Henrik amusing, especially as much of his 'work' has seemed to be aggrandising himself, opening exhibitions of his artistic endeavours -sculpture etc, giving poetry readings of his own works, and so on. There is no doubt that he nd Queen Daisy are both arty and creative. Just how much recognition either of them would get in the outside world if they were not who they are is debatable, however.

I am glad both foundations are donating money to help support hungry children around the world. I feel sorry for the children in poverty. They are in unfortunate circumstances and need all the help they can get.  People who are rich should be willing to assist them!

QuoteDanish Royal Family donates 750,000 Danish Kroner for world's hungry children

The Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik Foundation has teamed with the Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary Foundation to donate 750,000 Danish kroner to support the world's hungry children.

The considerable donation was revealed as part of a televised fundraising event in Denmark on Saturday, 4 February – the eleventh annual Denmark Collection 2017 DR Saturday Night. The event was the culmination of the annual Denmark Collection (a public collection outreach), and the funds will be used to assist children in financially tumultuous developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America as part of a joint endeavour between the DR and twelve of the world's largest humanitarian organisations.

The evening – a culmination of a raft of fundraising initiatives across Denmark – saw five hours of entertainment from Danish stars and celebrities who also took to the phones to answer calls and process donations. The theme was 'No child should go hungry' with the focus of the evening and fundraising on preventing hunger and achieving solid food security through sustainable agriculture and better nutrition.

I have been following this young lady since she married the crown prince of Denmark and she is such an asset to this family, through time she has made her life and role with a strong sense of purpose and love for the people of Denmark.  I think she is someone that young girls today can look up and be strong women and work for the same goals.

Mary is certainly popular with the people of Denmark, as is her husband Frederik. The Danish RF's work schedule, like the other Scandi monarchies, isn't exactly overwhelming of course, but the family is popular as a whole and so I think people accept that week's can go by without an engagement for the Crown Prince couple or Jaochim/Marie. I always think the Danish RF  appear to be a close and lovely bunch but apparently there are strains over Prince Henrik and also Fred and Jaochim's relationship is not as close as it once was, according to rumour.

The Scandinavian royals have always been close as relatives. They treat each other like family whenever they are at social events such as birthday celebrations, weddings, christenings, and royal duties. One personal moment that I liked was when Prince Daniel was taking a picture of Princess Estelle and Crown Princess Mary together at King Gustaf's birthday celebration, last year. They definitely treated each other like family!

QuoteQueen Margrethe talks about her son's relationship with Scandinavia's Crown Prince(ss) couples

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark has recently given an interview to the magazine "Norden nu" owned by the association "Norden". In the interview, the Queen spoke about many topics that she thinks are important, including cooperation in the Nordic nations and Danish history.

Queen Margrethe also spoke about the relationship between the Scandinavian Royal family's, which are all related to each other. She pays particular attention to relations between the Scandinavian Crown Prince(ss) couples. The Queen was asked in the interview if she feels like a person who brings the Nordic countries together. The Queen replied, "Our common values are building bridges between our Nordic nations. Therefore, I think we (Denmark) belong in the Nordic countries and not in other parts of Europe. Especially because we all can understand what is being written and said by each other."

Read the full interview of Queen Margrethe here. (The interview is written in Danish).

QuotePrincess Marie opens Birkerød High School Model United Nations

On Wednesday, 22 February, Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark opened the BIGMUN – Birkerød High School Model United Nations at the Birkerød Gymnasium with students from around the world. This location, just 25 minutes outside the Danish capital of Copenhagen, has hosted the Model United Nations every year since 2011.

The Model United Nations puts students in fictional scenarios to debate important social issues as would take place in a real United Nations debate in the General Assembly. This year's BIGMUN will take place from 22nd February through the 26th of the month. Students are there representing Germany, Denmark, Spain, Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden, Lebanon, and the United States.

Part of the mission statement of the BIGMUN states, "Birkerød Gymnasium's Model United Nations (BIGMUN) is committed to embracing and spreading the spirit of Model United Nations. Through simulated UN conferences, students are able to debate numerous international issues in the manner of the actual parliamentary procedures of the real UN, which promotes international awareness and understanding, as well as being a platform for forming friendships through educational and cultural enrichment."

QuoteQueen Margrethe announces this year's royal summer tours

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark travels every summer along the Danish coast on the Danish royal yacht "Dannebrog". This summer, the Queen will conduct two journeys with the 85-year-old ship. The first summer trip will last from 13 June to 16 June. During this voyage, Her Majesty will visit the Danish coastal towns of Kalundborg and Mariagerfjord. The second trip will take place from 30 August to 1 September. Then, Queen Margrethe will visit the Danish island of Bornholm. The programme for the Queen's visit to these sites has not yet been determined.

Last year, one of the Queen's summer trips with the ship Dannebrog was more severe than usual. It was on 17 July 2016 that three men shot several rounds with a spud gun towards the royal yacht when it was anchored just outside Sønderborg Castle. Queen Margrethe was inside the castle and was not hurt in the incident. The royal yacht was not hit by the shots, but the three men admitted that they tried with the purpose of hitting the ship. In December 2016, three Danish citizens were sentenced to a three-month suspended sentence after they fired at the Dannebrog.

QuoteQueen Margrethe's mysterious dinner was held yesterday – this happened

There was uncertainty associated with the dinner hosted by Queen Margrethe of Denmark yesterday. This meant that there was an unusually large press turnout outside Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Both Danish and Scandinavian press were present and tried as best they could to squeeze information out of government members as they arrived at the dinner.

Danish press had nagged the Danish royal court ever since the dinner was announced last week. The Queen's secretaries have not had much to do but to respond to press inquiries and questions about yesterday's dinner. In the beginning, the royal court did not want to answer any questions about with the dinner.

Finally, the royal court thought that the press fussed so much that they had no choice but to make a public statement. The Queen's cabinet secretary told the Danish newspaper "Berlingske" that he could confirm that it would not publish any news from the royal house during the dinner. Cabinet Secretary Henning Fode reports further, "Sometimes a dinner is held because the royal family has something important to say, sometimes a dinner is held only because the Queen wants to follow tradition to see her partners at regular intervals."

QuoteCrown Princess Mary visits women living in hardship

Denmark's Crown Princess Mary undertook a trip to Bangladesh from the 4-6 of April. She witnessed first-hand women's economic empowerment when she visited the rural community of Barisal and a ready-made garment factory in Gazipur.

The Crown Princess joined the Danish Development Cooperation Minister, Ulla Tornaes. As reported by a newspaper from Bangladesh, the two saw how Denmark's development efforts in women's economic empowerment and capacity are building in the country.

Her Royal Highness and Minister Tornaes were accompanied on Wednesday by Ambassador Mikael Hemniti Winther to Barisal. They visited a rural infrastructure project that works in partnership with LGED. Denmark employs local women who are underprivileged, and they build climate resilient roads.

Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Queen Margrethe's sister, will soon resume her official duties in Denmark. The Danish Royal Court has announced that Princess Benedikte will hold a board meeting for her mother's memorial foundation, Dronning Ingrids Hæderslegat on 20 April. This will take place at the Tivoli in Copenhagen.

His Highness Prince Richard Casimir Karl August Robert Konstantin was the 6th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. He was born 29 October 1934 in Giessen, Germany and had been the head of the House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg since the death of his father in 1969. He is the husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark, the younger sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

QuotePrincess Marie of Denmark opens emergency management forum

Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark, in an unannounced event, opened the National Accident Prevention Forum at the Kastellet in Copenhagen on Thursday, 20 April that discussed emergency preparedness in Denmark. The forum was held by the Denmark Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) of which Marie is the Corps Master à la suite of the Emergency Board.

Earlier this year, the agency came up with plans to utilise in the case of accidents or natural disasters. A press release from the DEMA said that the "goal of the forum's work is to reduce the number of deaths as a result of fire."

Additionally, they added that earlier this year, "One of the main points of the strategy was to establish a national forum to prevent and reduce the cost of accidents and disasters."

These homes are wonderful. We have Ranald MacDonald homes here in Australia near children's hospitals, begun and maintained by a big drive by Macca's' fast food outlets. These places allow the parents, usually the mother, and any other younger siblings to remain near to their seriously ill child while treatment continues. I think it's a fantastic idea as many of these families reside in country areas. Glad to see Denmark has much the same and that Mary is supporting this endeavour.

QuoteCrown Prince and Princess of Denmark have foreign exchange student living with them

Have you ever wished you could be a foreign exchange student somewhere and get the opportunity to live with a royal? For one foreign student in Denmark, this is a reality.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark recently revealed at the University of Copenhagen that a foreign exchange student is living with the Crown Prince Couple at their home in Frederik VIII's Palace, which is part of the Amalienborg Palace complex in the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

She was at the University of Copenhagen on 3 May for the annual presentation of The Crown Princess Scholarship. Each year, the scholarship, which is in its 13th year, is given out to two students from the partner universities in Australia of the University of Copenhagen. The two Australian scholars who were awarded the scholarships this year are Avril Jane Francis and Thomas Patrick Lynch. Francis is studying sustainable urban planning at Griffith University while Lynch is working toward a degree in economics at the University of Queensland.

Its always a source of wonder to me that Joachim and Marie aren't more popular in Denmark. I know the Crown Prince couple seem to suck most of the PR available, and I've always had a soft spot for Frederik and Mary (with her Aussie connections.) However, Joachim and Marie are always engaged and happy and interested on their engagements. Happily married too, nice family, I just don't understand it really. Maybe it's the old attachment to Alexandra remaining a very long time.
Title: Re: Danish Monarchy Current Events
Post by: TLLK on December 07, 2017, 05:32:19 PM
@Curryong-One of my parents' former neighbors was Danish and I asked her a similar question. Basically she said that Joachim comes off as a bit "grand" when compared to his brother even though most people acknowledge that Joachim is the smarter and more polished of the two brothers. Frederik is known to stumble over his speeches and replies during interviews. Also the tabloids were more forgiving of Frederik's exploits as a single man and tended to not report them. Mary is very popular despite what certain royalty sites imply. <_<
Alexandra enjoyed immense popularity when married to Joachim, but that has tapered off in recent years especially after her most recent divorce. There is discussion as to her appenage that she'd been receiving. People like Marie, but she doesn't receive the same amount of coverage. Naturally as the CP couple Frederik and Mary have a higher profile, so they're better known. (In a nutshell the neighbor confirmed what our TRF Danish poster Muhler has stated over the years.) :xmas4:

Thank you TLLK. Yes, Muhler is always informative and accurate. I have looked at opinion polls published online and wondered at the great disparity in popularity between the couples. It is unfair, but sometimes one brother gets away with murder and his sibling can't, and that seems to be the case with Fred and Joachim.

Queen Margrethe ?lost for words? after Donald Trump cancels State Visit ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/queen-margrethe-lost-for-words-after-donald-trump-cancels-state-visit-129170/)

QuoteQueen Margrethe of Denmark is reported to be ?shocked? after President Trump cancelled his upcoming state visit to the Kingdom after a dispute over Greenland.

According to Danish newspaper BT, Her Majesty is ?shocked? by the impulsive decision, with the President pulling out of the visit just two weeks before it was due to take place.

A spokesperson for The Queen reacted to the news saying: ?That was a surprise! We are simply lost for words.?

The Danish royal household had already put a lot of work and effort into the visit as they prepared to welcome the US President.

The Queen?s staff had cancelled their summer leave to help prepare the visit after Her Majesty invited Trump to visit her country last month.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday night, President Trump said: ?Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen?s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.

?The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future.?

President Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, was due to arrive in Copenhagen on September 2nd and depart Denmark the following day, September 3rd.

The President has expressed interest in buying Greenland which is ruled by Margrethe on several occasions.

However, he has been told in no uncertain terms that Greenland is not for sale.

While State Visits have been cancelled or postponed in recent years often times due to a domestic crisis in the incoming or host nation, I must admit that this reason is a first for me.

The POTUS is interested in purchasing Greenland from the Danish. He's been told that parts of the kingdom are not for sale.

Playing the devils advocate, Trump first and foremost is a Businessman...Since allegedly there were ''initial'' talks between the governments of the USA/Denmark to lessen the USD 700+Million yearly debt Denmark has to pay/keep afloat Greenland, the usual businessman will assess...here comes the play of the businessman playing 'chess' to instead of increasing USA interests; i.e. there is a USA military base, which I believe Denmark told them 'you can make it bigger, but pay bigger rent, the USA gov moved their chess piece saying we propose to buy the island.

He did a check, and put them on the spot. If at the end Greenland is sold; it will be checkmate.

Disclaimer: I have read both sides of the story, the move has to come now from Denmark, I believe they will try to find other options to relieve the yearly (almost 1 billion) to keep the Island (and Islanders, a very very small population of 56K) bouyant. It will be very difficult in this economy, as they will have to decide with business negociations with USA or China (they constructed 3 small airports there). What Denmark thought was a temporary economic slump with 'maintaining' the island, it has turned into a more than 10 years of paying the island keepup.

Not everything is about money. Denmark may be a small country but it's a proud one and Greenland is Danish and will remain so. Trump does a lot of things on impulse and reacts like a two year old when things don't go his way. The way he's treated the Danes in withdrawing from a State Visit, after months of planning by the Danish court, is appalling in my view, though I don't know why his behavior should surprise anyone. Trump is not a businessman but a HOS and should try to behave like one. He's certainly the reverse of being a Statesman in any sense of the word.
Title: Re: Danish Monarchy Current Events
Post by: wannable on August 22, 2019, 06:19:56 PM
Maybe, but after the G7 meeting, the invitation to Denmark needs to be substantiated, table of discussion, it's a high profile visit, not a light diplomacy, Trump is not a Royal, therefore my previous comment. The evil USA saw the opportunity when Denmark proposed to bigger your military installation for rent, Trumps treasury man was the one who spilled the beans, hence economic journalists speak about Denmark has to financially keep afloat the almost 1 billion per year help to Greenland  if not their island livery dies...

Post by: Curryong on August 22, 2019, 06:30:33 PM
No, Trump isn't a Royal. Far from it. He is however a HOS and he should behave like one and show some manners. And it's not up to the US to put pressure on a small country, like they've done in the past in Central America. When this base was established in the first place during WW2 Denmark was in danger of invasion but of course the US pressed for an advantageous treaty for them all the same. A bit like the Lease and Lend elderly shipping they were so keen to offload on to Britain in an act of 'kindness'.
Title: Re: Danish Monarchy Current Events
Post by: wannable on August 22, 2019, 07:16:35 PM
He doesn't have manners, he's a businessman and left the twitter message until later, another time...leaving the chess piece, the ball at Denmark's side.

I just hope Denmark doesn't give in, he is today pressuring them via the NATO to pay full 2% in military, if not, what will USA do? Make an exchange...you'll see.

The only other military base who left and came back (strategy of cut ties then come back) because it's government missed the moneys with the military bases, USA history is the Philippines during the 2 eras of Barrack Obama.

The Philippines was part of the defacto American Empire in the 19th century however, and regarded almost as an US Imperial possession. Denmark doesn't have those kinds of links, thank God. It's a totally independent little country, and doesn't deserve the Trump treatment.

Crown Prince Frederik visits Copenhagen?s emergency services ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/crown-prince-frederik-visits-copenhagens-emergency-services-155225/)

QuoteOn Thursday, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark visited the emergency services in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. The employees here have been on the front lines since the outbreak of the pandemic last year and they have taken care of the citizens of the region.

Crown Prince Frederik?s rather informal visit was divided into two parts. First, His Royal Highness had a look at the vehicles that the ambulance service uses when they pick up COVID-patients. He talked for a long time with the ambulance workers who are working to fight the virus every day. The Crown Prince then went to the switchboard, which receives calls from all over the Copenhagen area, but which in recent months has been used a lot by people calling in when they suspect an infection of COVID-19. The Crown Prince learned more about how the work here is done to determine whether it is COVID-19 and what further action is taken.

The Crown Prince also learned about the mobile test centres that are sent to areas with a high concentrations of infected people. His Royal Highness came with the following statement after his visit: ?In addition to driving out into residential areas to establish pop-up test centres, it is also the Emergency Management Agency that drives out to nursing homes and the socially disadvantaged to test citizens for COVID-19. In total, emergency response, test centres and mobile devices can test more than 50,000 a day. I would like to thank the Emergency Management Agency for their efforts.?

In addition to the established Danish corona hotline, the Emergency Management Agency has also developed a chatbot that helps citizens assess whether or not to call if they need COVID-related medical help, to call their own doctor or to just stay home when symptoms occur.

Crown Princess Mary shares personal message about coronavirus vaccine ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/crown-princess-mary-shares-personal-message-about-coronavirus-vaccine-155382/)

QuoteCrown Princess Mary shared a poignant message about hope for an end to the coronavirus pandemic on the Danish Royal House?s Instagram account.

The post, shared Wednesday afternoon, comes after the Crown Princess attended a meeting of the World Health Organisation?s Regional Office for Europe earlier in the day, where the ambassadors for the region received an update on the coronavirus and a status on vaccinations.

?What I took with me from the briefing was that even though there is still a long way to go, there is reason to be optimistic ? infection rates are falling in several places, we are constantly building up new important knowledge? and then we now have the vaccine. I can feel in myself and others around me that it feels heavy right now and that our patience is being put to the test. Therefore, it is good to hear that we can be hopeful ? it can give us energy to persevere and hold on.?

Another future monarch is headed to boarding school in the autumn of 2021. Christian's older cousin Nikolai also attended the school.

Prince Christian of Denmark to attend prestigious boarding school from the autumn ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/prince-christian-of-denmark-to-attend-prestigious-boarding-school-from-the-autumn-158437/)

QuoteChristian completes his school education in Gentofte this summer, it has been confirmed that the future Danish king will attend a prestigious boarding school from the autumn.

The following statement was published Wednesday by the Danish Royal Court: ?At the end of June, His Royal Highness Prince Christian will finish ninth grade at Traneg?rdskolen in Gentofte, where the Prince has been a student since first grade.

?The prince wants to continue his schooling at Herlufsholm Gymnasium in N?stved, where he is registered for the boarding school after the summer holidays.?

His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark, the first cousin of Prince Christian, attended 10th grade at Herlufsholm School and received his upper secondary education there as well. So this is not the first time the school will educate a Danish prince. Prince Christian will, however, become the first future monarch to go to the school.

Herlufsholm School is a private day and boarding about 80 kilometres south of Copenhagen. Herlufsholm was founded in 1565 as a boarding school for the Danish nobility on the site of a former Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. There are about 600 students at the school of which approximately 275 students are boarders who lived in the dormitories. The pupils follow a 10-day programme with lessons on Saturdays followed by 3-day weekends.

The school has a reputation for being very demanding and a number of students have left the school after a short time after they described the requirements as too great. The school makes no secret of the fact that they expect a lot from their students and that they are not a private school where you can pay for good grades.

Princess Marie launches calendar helping cause close to her heart ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/princess-marie-launches-calendar-helping-cause-close-to-her-heart-168075/)

QuotePrincess Marie, who lives and works in Paris, France, on a daily basis, has been in Denmark for a very special occasion.

For Princess Marie of Denmark, it was a good and pleasant experience to be in Copenhagen to focus on this year?s developing country?s Christmas calendar and enjoy a very special Christmas tradition. On Thursday morning, Marie participated, as a patron of DanChurchAid, in the launch of the Children?s Development Calendar for 2021.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has collaborated with the Children?s Development Calendar since 1962. Every year, the Development Calendar focuses on a new country and a new development project.

More than 150 children from second to fourth grade were together with Her Royal Highness to launch this year?s edition of the Children?s U-Country Calendar at Heiberg School in Copenhagen. This year, the profits from the sale of the Children?s U-Country Calendar go to a DanChurchAid project, which supports children in the Turkana region in northern Kenya.

DanChurchAid?s work in the region aims to help more families with the opportunity to send their children to school. Princess Marie has been a patron of DanChurchAid for the past ten years.

In the school?s hall, Danish Minister for Development Aid, Flemming M?ller Mortensen, the school principal and Secretary General of DanChurchAid joined the Princess for the presentation of this year?s U-Country Calendar, the associated website and teaching material about Kenya. In connection with the event, the Princess told the students about her work as a patron of DanChurchAid and about her meetings with children in other countries.

I?m not fat shaming or anything but does it appear to anyone else here that Angela Merkel has really packed on the  pounds over the last few months? Following on from the unexplained tremors/shaking she experienced before on several occasions that makes me wonder if her health is all it should be.

As for the rejected fist bump, surely State officials are given some sort of briefing on greeting visiting royals and HOS on State Visits? Daisy is delightfully down to earth in many respects (and some I wish the BRF would imitate) but it?s no surprise really that she didn?t want to participate in fist bumping. I can imagine visiting politicians especially US ones responding to a fist bump but not an elderly royal.

If there had to be a "Queen of Crafters" among the royals I might be tempted to give the crown to QMI though her former peer Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, the late DoE and the PoW all are known for their artistic endeavors too in sculpting and painting respectively.  Still Margrethe seems to have the most varied interests and is the one who is frequently involved behind the scenes working on costuming and sets for Danish productions and creating the Amalienborg Nisser too.

So I hereby bequeath the golden glue gun to HM Queen Margrethe I of Denmark on behalf of RIF's administrator, moderators and members.  :windsor1: :Jen:(That's all we could afford seeing that the mod team is  over budget again on snacks and beverages for the mod lounge.) :partaay:

Yes, a surprising number of royals paint, including members of the BRF. I do think that Queen Margrethe was quite unique though, considering that Henrik was also heavily involved in the Arts, a bit like Victoria and Albert really, both of whom drew and painted and loved music.

So I?m supportive of the golden glue gun going to Queen Daisy!

I am also very much surprised that the Mod budget is in debit in the run up to Xmas. All this splurging on snacks and drinkie winks will have to be watched in the New Year, after the NY toasts or you?ll find the cupboard will be bare when we are all celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. I am therefore sending the team a digital gift of a selection of Aussie wines and ciders to enjoy. As our Chinese market for these has now gone you all might as well reap the benefit.

A good idea. Perhaps you could email her and ask.  I?m sure she has a tapestry or two designed by herself that she can spare.

I also think that Queen Margrethe is a fabulous lady, she is an incredible artist in needlework also, some of her pieces that she has done are in churches that she attends. On another site of royals it has shown many of her works of needlework and she loves the use of color, in all her homes she has decorated them with brilliant colors, patterns and fabrics.   I would love to just spend an hour watching her doing her needlework and how she uses color.  I love doing needlework also yet in no way am I as talented as she is. Also she is very interested in archeology and digs and museums, the woman is one of the most interesting royal ladies ever.   Being a Queen, a wife, a mother and an artist and all that goes with it, where does she get the time to breathe....

A few photos from Princess Marie's trip to Cambodia on behalf of Dan Church Aid.

Log into Facebook | Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/DanChurchAidKh/posts/116680234306924)

Princess Marie of Denmark begins humanitarian trip to Cambodia with poignant visit ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/princess-marie-of-denmark-begins-humanitarian-trip-to-cambodia-with-poignant-visit-174899/)

QuotePrincess Marie of Denmark has undertaken a trip to Cambodia in her role as honorary President of DanChurchAid, the Danish church?s humanitarian foundation.

The program will take Her Royal Highness through some of the most evocative sites in the country, with her first stop of the trip being the Killing Fields outside of Phnom Penh, a memorial to the massacre carried out by Pol Pot?s Khmer Rouge.

But the schedule for the visit will be primarily focused on the areas that Princess Marie and DanChurchAid have been working on for many years: poverty, sustainable development and human rights.

The trip started on Sunday, 3 April, and will end on the following Thursday, 7 April. It will bring the Princess to the provinces of Takeo and Kampong Chhang, as well as the capital Phnom Penh.

DanChurchAid turned 100 in 2022, and this trip serves as a celebration of the organisation?s significant milestone, as well as being a trip to mark Princess Marie?s tenth anniversary as Patron in 2021. Cambodia holds a special significance for the Princess because it was the first country that she travelled to in her new role with DanChurchAid.

The organisation operates in a number of countries around the world, including Ethiopia, Myanmar and Uganda, and established a presence in Cambodia in 1979, in the wake of the civil war. The organisation?s first Cambodian office was opened in Phnom Penh in 1997.

Princess Marie?s visit will include organisations such as Mith Samlanh, a partner for DanChurchAid that works with vulnerable children and families, LICADHO, a human rights organisation, and Voices for Gender Equality, another partner of DanChurchAid that works with marginalised groups such as members of the LGBTQ+ community and women who go through domestic violence.

Danish royals release statement after tragic mall shooting ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/danish-royals-release-statement-after-tragic-mall-shooting-178675/)

Quoteueen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark have released a statement after the tragic mall shooting in Copenhagen.

In a joint statement, they said: ?Tonight we have received the shocking news about the serious incidents in Copenhagen earlier today.

?We do not yet know the full extent of the tragedy, but it is already clear that more people have lost their lives and that even more have been injured.

?Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the victims, their relatives and all those affected by the tragedy.

?The situation calls for unity and care, and we would like to thank the police, the emergency services and the health authorities for their quick and effective efforts during these hours.?

Several people have been killed and at least three hospitalised after a shooting inside the shopping centre Field?s in the Danish capital on Sunday, 3 July.

One person has been arrested. Copenhagen Head of Police Soren Thomassen told reporters at a news conference that the suspect is a 22-year-old ethnic Danish man.

Police have not ruled out terrorism, and an extensive investigation is ongoing.

Danish Royal House reveals summer trips on royal yacht ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/danish-royal-house-reveals-summer-trips-on-royal-yacht-186247/)

QuoteIt may still be winter, but the Danish Royal Family is already looking forward to the summer. They have announced their summer travel plans aboard the royal yacht, Dannebrog.

The Danish tradition of summer cruises throughout Europe began under King Christian IX, who was King of Denmark from 1863 to 1906. The family spends several months of the summer cruising, and the royal yacht is considered the official residence of the Danish monarch when they are sailing.

Queen Margrethe II will visit several different cities and regions this summer. The Queen?s summer cruise will begin on 2 May 2023. On 15 May, she will visit Aller?d Municipality for a reception at Fredensborg Palace.

The first official tour will start in Bornholm?s Regional Municipality on 5 June. On the 6th, she will visit the Ertholmene archipelago and then return to Bornholm on the 7th. The yacht will then continue on to Nordsj?lland and Halsn?s Municipality on 9 June to finish up Her Majesty?s first cruise.

The second cruise comes towards the end of the summer when Margrethe will visit Vordingborg Municipality on 29 August, and Randers Municipality on the 30th. The Queen?s second tour will end on 1 September with a visit to Fredericia Municipality.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog was built in 1931 and first sailed in 1932. Queen Alexandrine, the wife of King Christian X, named the ship. It is an impressive craft that replaced a paddle steamer (also called Danneborg).

Queen Margrethe discharged from hospital after surgery ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/queen-margrethe-discharged-from-hospital-after-surgery-186926/)

QuoteQueen Margrethe of Denmark is recuperating at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen after doctors gave her the go ahead to leave hospital following extensive back surgery.

Queen Margrethe returned home over a week after the operation. Her medical team said the procedure went well and that Her Majesty could continue to recover at the palace. However, her rehabilitation programme could take several months.

Her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, has resumed his role as regent, having returned from an official visit to India with his wife, Crown Princess Mary. In a short statement, the Royal Court said that the Crown Prince would continue his regency ?for the time being?.

The statement added that Queen Margrethe ?expresses her immense gratitude for the professional and excellent treatment? during her time in hospital.

The Royal Court announced that the Danish queen had returned home on March 2nd 2023, eight days after the surgery on February 22nd 2023.

Queen Margrethe has had several problems with her back and this latest surgery was announced several weeks before it took place.

Royal Court announces ?lengthy? recuperation for Queen Margrethe after operation ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/royal-court-announces-lengthy-recuperation-for-queen-margrethe-after-operation-186952/)

Quoteuse

Queen Margrethe faces a long period of rehabilitation following back surgery, the Danish Royal Court has announced.

Queen Margrethe, who underwent major back surgery at the end of February, may be in rehabilitation over the next few months, with Crown Prince Frederik stepping in as regent ?for the time being.?

The Danish Royal Court did not provide an estimated timeline for The Queen?s return to royal duties, however there are four members of the Royal Family who are able to step in as regent if Queen Margrethe is unavailable: Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Benedikte.

Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Benedikte have taken on the duties of regent since Queen Margrethe?s back surgery; with her younger sister taking over while the Crown Prince and Crown Princess were in India for an official visit at the start of March.

The role of a regent in Denmark involves exercising all of the monarch?s regular duties while the monarch is either out of the country or incapacitated.

The Danish Royal Family?s calendar is currently updated until 20 March, with Crown Prince Frederik listed as regent until 17 March. Further updates on whether the regency period continues past this date will likely be announced in a few weeks? time.

This sentiment was echoed by the remarks of the Danish Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, who said: ?The United States is out most important ally and partner. Denmark?s Royal Court reveals when Queen Margrethe hopes to return to duty after surgery ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/denmarks-royal-court-reveals-when-queen-margrethe-hopes-to-return-to-duty-after-surgery-187659/)

QuoteQueen Margrethe of Denmark expects to be able to resume all her constitutional duties by the middle of April, almost two months after extensive back surgery.

As plans for her 83rd birthday were announced, the Royal Court in Copenhagen confirmed that the Queen of Denmark hopes to take up all her powers again on the same day.

It means that other members of her family will continue to act as regent until at least April 16th 2023.

Queen Margrethe underwent planned surgery on February 22nd and remained in hospital for a week afterwards before continuing her recuperation at home.

Since then, her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, and her sister, Princess Benedikte, have taken on the duty of the regency in turn. The Crown Prince is currently regent until the end of March 2023.

The Royal Court said that Queen Margrethe?s recovery was going well but there would still be engagements she couldn?t carry out as she got better and those would be announced as and when.

Queen Margrethe will celebrate her birthday with a balcony appearance. It is likely to be her first public appearance since her surgery.

On April 16th, as she turns 83, Her Majesty will appear on the balcony of Christian IX?s Palace at Amalienborg with her family. Just before that, there will be a ceremonial changing of the guard at the palace.

Margrethe II has ruled Denmark since January 1972 and is now the longest reigning monarch in Europe.

Danish parliament in favour of Prince Joachim keeping his allowance ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/danish-parliament-in-favour-of-prince-joachim-keeping-his-allowance-188175/)

QuoteThe Danish Parliament is in support of Prince Joachim receiving his allowance when he and his family move to the United States later this year.

The only parties are not in favour of the Danish Prince?whose children lost their princely titles on 1 January and the announcement of which caused a great uproar in Denmark last fall?were members of the SF, Enhedslisten and Alternativet, according to reports from Danish broadcaster TV2.

Franciska Rosenkilde, a member of Alternativet, said that her party?s opposition is purely due to the nature of Prince Joachim?s new job.

On the floor of the Parliament, Rosenkilde said, ?We do not believe that the Danish government should spend almost four million kroner annually to hire a lobbyist to look after the interests of the arms industry?regardless of whether the person has the title of prince or not. If Dansk Erhverv or Dansk Industri thinks it is relevant, then they can employ him on general terms. It should not be the state?s task.?

Because Prince Joachim?s new job will continue to keep him out of Denmark, it is required by the Danish constitution that his allowance is debated in Parliament. Princess Marie receives no funding, nor do any of his children.

Danish media reports that it seems very likely that Prince Joachim will continue to receive his allowance, as most members from other parties all seem to hold favourable opinions of the royal and his work as a Danish military attach? to France.

In March, the Danish Royal Court confirmed rumours that Prince Joachim would move to Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2023, when his position in Paris ends.

QuoteOne of the most peculiar and less known traditions was observed at the end of King Harald and Queen Sonja?s official visit to Denmark.

On Sunday, 18 June, before the monarchs boarded the Royal Yacht Norge to return to Oslo, they signed one of the windows at Fredensborg Palace.

This is not an innovation brought on by Queen Margrethe but rather a tradition that dates back more than 160 years.

The tradition of signing the windows at Fredensborg dates back to when the  many descendants of King Christian IX who had married into many of the European royal families would return for their annual summer gatherings. Traditionally the names were etched into the glass with a diamond.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised that Harald and Sonja hadn't already added their names years before.

Today the Queen, the Crown Prince couple and Princess Benedikte attended the Opening of Parliament. The Danish royals sit in the gallery and are considered to be guests at this event.

Video of QMI arriving. She does have a cane but doesn't use it. There's a funny moment as she and Mary try to kiss, but Mary's hat is too large. :hehe:

I?m glad to see that Queen Daisy is walking and moving more comfortably after her op. She didn?t take too long to recover from it at all, considering her age. And she and Mary are just going to have to blow air kisses at each other if such a situation occurs again!

QMI attended a synagogue service.

Queen Margrethe attends synagogue service ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/queen-margrethe-attends-synagogue-service-194014/)

QuoteQueen Margrethe has attended a service at a synagogue in Copenhagen to show support for the Jewish community in the aftermath of the Hamas attack in Israel.

The Queen of Denmark was joined by the country?s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister at the service in Krystalgade on October 14th 2023.

The national anthems of both Denmark and Israel were sung at the service. There were speeches from the Head Rabbi and Israel?s ambassador during the ceremony.

In the early morning of 7 October, Palestinian terrorists from the group Hamas infiltrated Israel by air, land and sea ? killing at least 1,200 people and injuring 1,700. The group took over 100 hostages back to the Gaza Strip.

A week on, Queen Margrethe, dressed in black, took part in the service in the Danish capital.

At least in Denmark, not so much in Spain perhaps, royals from Queen Margrethe down, enjoy getting the bling out including tiaras, and like hosting such events. Denmark excelled in hosting Prince Christian?s 18th birthday bash.

@Curryong-I'm hoping that we'll see some pieces from Spain's Joyas de Pasar collection at the State Banquet. Letizia appears to be more comfortable wearing the collections grander pieces when she's outside of Spain. As for the DRF, I believe that Margrethe and Mary will be wearing their lovely tiaras and more.
There is such a strong relationship between the Danish and Spanish royal houses with their Greek relations, that we'll see some warm interaction between "Tia" Margrethe and Felipe.

Yes indeedy TLLK. There are some very close links and when they all meet it?s lovely to see. For anyone interested this article from Royal Central details some of them, including King Felipe and his ?Aunt? Daisy. And the Greek-Danish Houses of course.

And now they've landed in Denmark. Queen Letizia has changed her outfit and appears to be now wearing a dress without a hat. Her Danish counterparts QMI, CPss Mary and Princess Benedikte are all wearing hats as I would have expected.

Kudos to Queen Margrethe for navigating the tiny carriage steps with a cane and Queen Letizia for managing the steps in very high heels. The Spanish court does not use carriages, so Felipe and Letizia only experience this mode of transportation when they are abroad. Honestly I am amazed that King Felipe fit inside of the carriage.

*****

Her Majesty The Queen's New Year Address 2023.

We have just celebrated Christmas, the wonderful festive days, with Christmas trees, lit candles, and children full of expectations. At the darkest time of the year, Christmas shines brightly. Now the new year is just around the corner, tonight we are celebrating New Year's Eve. A year lies ahead of us which we shall meet with expectation but also with concern, for we see turbulence and upheaval in the world at large.

Some years stand out clearly in our minds because we associate them with specific events.

We remember the year 1943 for the Rescue of the Danish Jews. It was 80 years ago in October.

What are we to do when innocent people are attacked?

We must do what the Danish population did then. Ordinary citizens helped their fellow human beings quite spontaneously. They alerted their neighbour, hid a colleague, and brought families to safety in Sweden. The vast majority of Danish Jews succeeded in escaping from the Nazi genocide.

At the time when Denmark was occupied, my grandfather, Christian X, expressed the attitude of the people: 'Jews were and are esteemed citizens of Danish society'. When we know each other, we are also able to empathise with each other's fate. Compassion and helpfulness will then follow as a matter of course.

The year we are taking leave of tonight 2023 will be remembered for the horrible terrorist attack on civilians in Israel. It is incomprehensible.

Also the war in the wake of the attack is horrible. There are no winners, only losers. Women and children have not opted for the war themselves, but they are paying the price. Innocent people are the first victims. Not only in the Middle East far from here, but also in Denmark.

The war makes antisemitism spread again. It is tragic and shameful.

Tonight, I wish to make a clear and unequivocal call for all of us in Denmark to treat each other with respect.

We must approach each other more closely, not distance ourselves from each other. We must remember that we are all human beings. This applies to Jews as well as Palestinians.

Both Jews and Palestinians in Denmark get anxious when the phone rings. Is it bad news about the family

The Ukrainian refugees experience the same fear.

The year 2022 will always be associated with the attack on Ukraine. This year, the war has continued with the same intensity and with huge losses of human life. Even though attention is directed at the Middle East right now, the Ukrainians fight for freedom must not be forgotten.

Danish support is of great importance to the Ukrainian people. This was clearly expressed when President Zelensky visited Denmark in summer. We can take pride in that.

My New Year greetings tonight go to all who celebrate New Year in the shadow of terrorism and war.

It is not only war and conflicts that make the future uncertain.

The weather seems to be acting up in various directions. It seems chaotic and it is frightening.

Throughout the world, people are affected in different ways. Most of us probably remember that July was chilly and rainy in Denmark. 2023 turned out to be the wettest year in Danish weather history. But for the world at large, July and August turned out to be the two hottest months ever.

Last month, the UN published a new climate report. The seriousness is obvious. The globe's climate is changing faster than we thought.

We need to address climate change. The consequences are not only in the future. They are here already, and they are extreme.

Most people in Denmark are fully aware of this, even if it has been difficult for some of us to fully realise it.

Together we must now find the hope and determination to do something.

Earlier this month, the COP28 climate summit was held in Dubai. The Crown Prince and Danish government ministers participated in this.

Denmark is a rich country with an important international voice. That puts us under an obligation to act.

We have also some of the technical solutions that are needed. It makes me proud that Danish scientists and companies contribute to creating a future where we take care of our globe and nature.

In the past year, we have heard a great deal about Artificial Intelligence. A new technology that may change our lives in ways we can hardly imagine. But how? What will be the consequences? Perhaps it can improve our society, but will we be able to control it?

Are we to be enthusiastic or concerned? I think we need to be thoughtful and attentive.

After all, the new technology is indeed artificial. It does not think for itself. It is fed with what human beings have already created.

Artificial intelligence leaves us with an altogether fundamental question: What is it that makes us human beings unique?

We human beings have hope and are curious. We have empathy and are creative. We have the ability to create and to think for ourselves. That is what has brought us far. We must not forget that.

Technology and machines have long ago replaced much manual work. Nevertheless, it does not mean that we human beings sit on our hands.

I have noticed that many have started on a hobby or a piece of needlework again. It probably began during the corona crisis; but then we could not stop again this applies at least to me. It gives us peace of mind, sitting there with a piece of needlework or working on something else with our hands; this goes for all age groups.

For many of us it is a spare-time activity to keep our hands occupied. For others, it is a life condition - a trade.

This applies to those who lay the bricks, draw the cables, and paint the walls in the houses where we live. It applies to those who build the wind turbines to provide us with clean energy. To those who take care of us when we are hospitalised or to those who nurse us when we cannot cope on our own any longer.

These are all functions that require skill, knowledge, and training and which deserve our utmost respect.

It is a pleasure to experience good craftsmanship. To look at a well-built wall, to see a smooth and beautifully painted wall, to admire a piece of furniture where the wood has been handled with care and insight, this fills me with joy every time.

We will remember the year 2023 as the year in which we could celebrate that my grandchild, Prince Christian, turned 18. It was a great day and, I believe, a wonderful day for him. He presented himself in a way that made all his family proud of him. He was surrounded by nice, excited, and happy young people from the entire kingdom, and he made a speech that commanded great respect. It made his grandmother proud.

Prince Christian said things as they were. It was not so common when I was young. Today, young people dare show that they can be insecure too. This openness is a strength which we others must admire, and from which we can learn.

Everybody knows the little word thanks.

It is a lovely word, both to say and to hear. In the word lies recognition of the fact that a human being is not alone. It is also the word, which we use as a New Year greeting: Thanks for the past year!

Thank you for the warmth and hospitality I meet with everywhere in Denmark.

The Kingdom of Denmark comprises three countries and three peoples. Each of us has our own identity and culture and each of us our own language. But we are united by a shared history, and we are united as human beings.

Tonight, I send my New Year wishes to everybody in Greenland and to everybody in the Faroe Islands. My thoughts often go north to the two countries and to the two peoples with a thank you for all that they have given me over the years.

My New Year greetings also go to the Danes in South Schleswig and to the many Danes who live and work abroad.

At the turn of the year, I wish to thank everybody in the defence, the police, and the emergency management services. You make an admirable and absolutely indispensable effort for our country.

Tonight, I would like to express a very special thank you. Thank you for the warmth and devotion which I and my family have received throughout many, many years.

In two weeks time I have been Queen of Denmark for 52 years. Such an amount will leave its mark on anybody  also on me! The time takes its toll, and the number of ailments increases. One cannot undertake as much as one managed in the past.

In February this year I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future  whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation.

I have decided that now is the right time. On 14th January, 2024  52 years after I succeeded my beloved father I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik.

Tonight, I first and foremost would like to express my thanks. Thank you for the overwhelming warmth and support which I have received during all these years. Thank you to the changing governments with whom the collaboration always has been rewarding, and thank you to The Parliament, who have always vested their confidence in me.

Thank you to the many, many people who on special occasions and in everyday life have embraced me and my family with kind words and thoughts, turning the years into a string of pearls.

The support and assistance which I have received throughout the years, have been crucial to the success of my task. It is my hope that the new King and Queen will be met with the same trust and devotion which have fallen to my lot.

They deserve it! Denmark deserves it!

I will conclude my new year?s address in my usual manner:

GOD BLESS DENMARK

GOD BLESS YOU ALL
