Who first referred to Diana as an English rose?

I believe it was the press who were complimenting her complexion when she and Charles were engaged.

Agreed, while there had to be someone who was the first, its was a commonly used description of her, so one would have to do some digging to find the very first mention, of course not counting any prior mentions before the courtship.

In my mind, its not that important, its an apt and lovely description of her, especially in those early days, one of many reasons she was so easy to love and adore.
"No other member of the Royal Family mattered that year, or I think for the next 17 years, it was just her." Arthur Edwards, The Sun Photographer, talking about Diana's impact.
