Mid August does seem a bit early for the first week of school. Decades ago in the continental United States the first day of school was not until the Tuesday after our American Labor Day holiday in September.

School districts across the U.S. are shifting to an earlier start date in part due to the administration of the Advanced Placement exams that are given in mid-May throughout the country.
