King Henry VII took the Richmond from the title of Earl of Richmond and bestowed it upon his favorite palace of Sheen by the River Thames in Surrey, the palace he rebuilt following a fire of Christmas 1498.

King William the Lion of Scotland, taken at Alnwick inn 1174, was imprisoned in Richmond Castle.   
King David II of Scotland was imprisoned in Richmond Castle after his defeat at Neville's Cross in 1346.
