It was informative to learn that there had not been one Winter Palace but four.     
It cost ten million roubles for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter I, to have the Winter Palace built.

When Catherine II became Empress, she found the Winter Palace crushing in size and herself stifled by its lush decor.
