The article stated that Mary's life was a product of her circumstances and beliefs.   
She was a royal princess. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII. She was an heiress. Though she was both a princess and an heiress, that was not enough. Henry VIII wanted a son.

I don't believe Mary was a bad person despite all the horrendous mistakes she made. I think her problem was that she loved too much (Phillip of Spain), believed too much (Catholicism/Pope) and cared too much (Anne Boleyn/Elizabeth). Early accounts show a serious and essentially good child who became bitter and withdrawn as her father's cruelty was unveiled in all its ghastliness.
