QuoteSpain's King Juan Carlos praised Elena Poniatowska's "rebel literature" on Tuesday at a gala luncheon a day before he is due to present the Mexican writer with the Cervantes Prize, the highest literary honor in the Spanish-speaking world.

Accompanied by Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, the monarch was able to appear at the luncheon after a two-year absence due to hip problems.

The head of state, leaning on his cane, greeted each and every one of the 120 guests who attended the event, headed by the Mexican author who had flown to Madrid with her children Emmanuel, Felipe and Paula.

QuoteMexican Writer Elena Poniatowska Receives Cervantes Prize

Mexican writer and journalist Elena Poniatowska has received the most important award for literature in the Spanish language, the Cervantes prize.  King Juan Carlos of Spain made the presentation at a ceremony in the town of Alcala de Henares, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes.

Ms Poniatowska, 81, is only the fourth woman to be awarded the prize in its almost four-decades-long history.  Her writings often explore the social injustice of her home country.
