Claude Bowes-Lyon (1855-1944) was the 14th Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne.
He was the maternal grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
When his daughter Elizabeth (the mother of Elizabeth II) was born in 1900, Claude had the title of Lord Glamis. His father Claude was the 13th Earl of Strathmore.

It is interesting that Claude was known as 14th and 1st Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. In the peerage of Scotland he was the 14th Earl. In the peerage of the United Kingdom he was the 1st Earl.

^ Yes, the older peerages in Scotland have always been different, because of course, Scotland and England were different kingdoms until the reign of King James I (or IV of Scotland) when the two countries were joined in Union. There's still controversy in Scotland today about the Queen being the second Elizabeth, because of Elizabeth I never ruling Scotland. The older Scottish aristocracy have titles given to them by the old Scottish kings. Ireland, when it was attached to Great Britain, was a different case again because of its history. Many of its old aristocratic families left when the English first ruled.

Claude Bowes-Lyon was keenly interested in his estates. He rode out early on his pony to inspect the multitude of small holdings which he owned. He imported larch from Norway to renew his forests.
