Josephine spent many hours at her writing table, dealing with a voluminous correspondence with her children and friends. She wrote to nurserymen about plants for her garden at Malmaison.

Napoleon had thought it as well not to inform his mother Letizia of his marriage to the Widow Beauharnais until after it had taken place. Letizia did not approve of the marriage.

Josephine wrote to Napoleon asking to be allowed to return to Malmaison, a move which she had hoped Empress Marie Louise had opposed on the grounds that it was too near Paris. Napoleon gave his consent.

After her divorce, Josephine would be able to retain her rank as Empress. All her debts would be settled and she would receive an allowance of three million francs a year. She could assume the additional title of Duchess of Navarre.

When Josephine was at the Baroque palace at Mombello, she was able to indulge her passion for flowers. These were planted under her direction all over the gardens.
