The Duke and Duchess of Kent followed the tradition established by Princess Marina of officiating at the prizegiving at the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament each year.

The Duke of Kent's death in the latter part of the war changed Marina and her children's lives irrevocably. Those three children grew up fatherless, Michael couldn't even remember him. Marina suffered financial difficulties. A tragedy, really.

Sad but no worse than many families who lost people in the war.  They were better off than most

I don't think that being a member of the BRF (and a pretty financially poor member at that) compensates for widowhood at a young age and bringing up three young children without a father.

There were lots of war widows, who were much poorer....Nothing compensates for the loss of a loved partner as I know too well but there were sadly many trageidies from the war...
