Its the end of an era. Sad in many ways, but Prince Philip is 96 next birthday, so it's more than time. I hope he enjoys some restful years.

He will probably be seen at events from time to time. So I doubt he'll totally disappear from the scene into retirement.

I don't think he'd give up unless he really felt he was getting too frail to do the job well.  I think he didn't want to be seen looking really shaky.. but I hope he's still able to spend time with the queen in private and enjoy a bit of carriage driving still. Worht about 20 of any of his kids, and about 100 of any of the grandchildren
