The Lennox Jewel was made for Margaret Douglas Stewart, Countess of Lennox in the 1570s.

It has been suggested that the Lennox locket was made to commemorate the return of Matthew Stewart, the exiled Earl in 1564 or the restoration of Matthew's lands and honors in 1565.
