Strange to think that King Carl Gustav is only a little older than Charles yet has been King in his country for almost fifty years. Of course he might have been in Charles?s position for decades, considering the long lives of all the recent Swedish monarchs, had his father not suffered a premature death when CG was a baby.

In a way he  led just as emotionally repressed a life as his counterpart as his mother was, like Elizabeth II, not exactly demonstrative, though his older sisters were affectionate. And then of course there?s been the handicap of dyslexia which must still be a burden. Still, today, here he was taking the salute in the Palace courtyard and surrounded by his children and many grandchildren, so it hasn?t been a bad life at all.

@Curryong-Yes it is very strange when you consider that due to the tragic death of his father, KCG succeeded his grandfather in his twenties and is now the longest reigning monarch in Swedish royal history. Now he's coming to the coronation of a peer who has been waiting seventy years to ascend to the throne.

Causes close to a jubilee King?s heart ? Royal Central

QuoteAs King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrates his Golden Jubilee, let?s look at some of the causes close to his heart.

The Swedish Royal House website lists the environment, nature and conservation, Scouting, technology and cars, art, music, food and sports among the causes the King passionately supports.

The King also has 61 patronages listed on his official web page; though these include honorary memberships as well. Patronages from members of the Swedish Royal Family are time sensitive, usually for a period of five years, and are sourced by organisations through applications sent to the Royal Court.

Among King Carl XVI Gustaf?s patronages are the African Medical and Research Foundation Sweden; the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences; Djurg?rden?s Hembygdsf?rening; the Swedish Red Cross; and Sweden?s National Sports Confederation.

The King?s environmental passions stem back to childhood. The Royal Court said that it ?laid the foundation for a long-term commitment to issues relating to the environment and nature conservation.?

Among his environmental patronages and appointments?stemming into nature, conservation, animal and wildlife?are Outdoor Promotion, The Forest Association, The Natural Step Foundation, and the Swedish Wetlands Foundation.

King Carl XVI Gustaf?s involvement with the World Scout Foundation stems back to his early years. A new foundation called Young Leadership was formed ahead of his 60th birthday to encourage young people to learn the values of the Scouts in their everyday lives.

The King also counts the Swedish Scout Association and the Swedish Scout Council among his patronages.

Will some of the Sommerlaths attend the private dinner at Drottningholm Palace?

The Danish court confirms that the following members of their family will be in attendance: Queen Margrethe, the Crown Prince couple and Queen Anne Marie of Greece.

QMI and QAM are first cousins to King Carl XVI Gustav. Their sister Princess Benedikte will not be attending as she will be appointed as the Regent during the absence of QMI and CPF.

Maybe it?s just me but we seem to have been reading about King CG?s Jubilee for months now and it?s still not over.

@Curryong -  No it's not you. There have been many articles leading up to the Jubilee even though the actual "Jubilee Week" starts next week.

I?m glad to hear that. Something seemed to be reported every week! God forbid that the King come down with a case of the flu next week.

Mind you, several Aussies have said the same to me (about the constant ceremonial and  the different ceremonies in Britain over the last twelve months.)

The King of Sweden reflects on the loss that handed him a throne ? Royal Central

QuoteKing Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has remembered his predecessor as monarch in a speech to parliament that marked the beginning of his Golden Jubilee.

Just hours before official celebrations for the milestone were due to begin, the Swedish king spoke to his country?s politicians as he officially opened the new parliamentary year. And he spoke movingly of the time, half a century ago, when he waited for the Swedish throne to pass to him.

King Carl Gustaf spoke to parliament on September 12th 2023 but as he addressed them, he noted that ?today, exactly 50 years ago, my family and I watched at the deathbed of my grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf. A few days later he passed away and I became king of the country.?

King Gustaf VI Adolf had been admitted to hospital in Helsingborg after becoming ill and developing pneumonia. He died there on September 15th 1973, at the age of 90. The first sight of his grandson as King Carl XVI Gustaf came as he left the hospital following his grandfather?s death.
