Delgatie Castle in Scotland has largely been in the Hay family for over 600 years.
Sir Gilbert Hay of Delgatie and many members of his family were killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.

Delgatie Castle has a turnpike stair of 97 treads that links the eight floors of the castle.

I loathe and detest castle steps. How women managed, especially in the dark and in long skirts, to traverse them without breaking their necks has always been a wonder to me. Narrow, winding stairways, high steps and narrow treads, no banisters, just awful. The Middle Ages was ghastly anyway, IMO. I've never wished to time travel earlier than the 19th century. At least most houses had decent staircases by then, as well!
