Title: Jordanian Monarchy: Current Events
Post by: Jennifer on January 16, 2017, 10:37:11 AM
A thread to discuss the current events and news of TM the King and Queen of Jordan and other members of the family

I like how Queen Rania is encouraging more girls to use social media to share their struggles & solutions for racism, poverty, women empowerment & equality. I think throughout history all over the world, we as women have worked hard to make hard to make our voices be heard. Modern technology such as social media has made it even more possible for us to easily share our thoughts without limitations.

Girls need to know that they can change the world with their unique ideas.

QuoteQueen Rania meets women from Sayyidat Nashmiyyat Group

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan met women from the Sayyidat Nashmiyyat Group this Wednesday, as part of her efforts to raise awareness of social media and online platforms in promoting positive change in communities and engendering greater social equality and opportunities.

As part of her meeting with the group, Her Majesty also met with its founder, Ms Enas Shahin and listened to her speak about the organisation's goals and strategies. Ms Shahin primarily spoke of how Sayyidat Nashmiyyat tried to encourage Jordanian women to use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to be more proactive in society, and use those sites as instruments in a constructive manner to promote positive change.

The group also hopes that its efforts will tackle not just women's issues within their societies, but also other social concerns such as racism, poverty, and inter-religious violence. So far, the group has been radically successful in combating all of these.

QuoteQueen Rania discusses educational reform with Jordan's Lower House Education Committee

On Monday, Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan met with Jordan's Lower House Education Committee to discuss educational reform, which is something Her Majesty is very passionate about. They spoke about critical issues including raising Jordan's overall standing in education through teacher training at the Queen Rania Teacher Academy.

MPs who are members of the Jordanian parliament's education committee were in attendance including Dr Barakat Al Muheirat Al Abbadi, Dr Suleiman Al Zaben, and Dr Safa' Momani. Student-teachers enrolled in the programme were also there to speak with the assembled MPs, leaders of the Queen Rania Teacher Academy, and Her Majesty.

The meeting began with a presentation from the CEO of the Queen Rania Teacher Academy, Haif Bannayan regarding "the academy's teacher training diploma program, and its partnerships with the ministry of education as well as local, regional and international universities," according to a press release sent out by the Office of Her Majesty.

QuoteKing Abdullah of Jordan decorates medical services with top honour

In a ceremony conducted this past Monday, His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan awarded the Royal Medical Services (RMS) with the highest military honour he could bestow – the Supreme Commander's Flag.

Before the Jordanian Royal Family, various high-ranking military officers, and important civil officials, the King presented the RMS the flag in recognition for their diverse services, efforts and contributions to the medical field. The award was granted by His Majesty in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Jordanian Armed Forces. He was greeted at the ceremony by an official 21-gun salute.

The handing over of the flag is a battle honour and tribute to the services and sacrifices that the Jordanian military undertakes on behalf of the Kingdom of Jordan and is a mark of great respect. It is the equivalent of a Victoria Cross, or the Medal of Honour, but is awarded to units rather than individuals. A seasoned member of the Armed Forces himself, the King is often eager to show his appreciation for the soldiers under his command, and ensure strong ties between the military, the government, and the Jordanian Royal Family.

QuoteQueen Rania of Jordan visits Hashimiyat Al Zarqa

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan undertook a visit to the Hashimiyat Al Zarqa on Monday. This was done to principally to check up on the progress of a number of small, community-based fundraising projects taking place in the area. Located in the Governorate of Al Zarqa, the projects are aimed towards the improvement of living standards in the area.

The Queen of Jordan was also accompanied during her visit by the founder of the Community Centre Association (CCA) and its President, Dr Firyah Saleh, all of whom toured the Al Hashimiyah Women Society for Social Development with its president, Ms Fatmeh al Jamal. The Women Society provides for the needs of the region's underprivileged groups, including women, poor families and orphans. It has been in operation since 2010.

After the tour, Her Majesty visited a business workshop conducted by the non-profit organisation Injaz, which offers lessons on how to develop business ideas into ventures that can actually turn a profit, as well as a kiosk run by local resident, Hussein al Hindawi. This was set up with funds from the Royal Hashemite Court (HRC). Mr al Hindawi, who suffers from blindness, has since been able to use the proceeds from his business to help support his family.

If King Abdullah II meets Donald Trump while he is in the United States, he will probably challenge his plan of banning Muslims from entering the country. He wouldn't be pleased about how he's judging all Muslims as terrorists or suspicious persons. King Abdullah II is a Muslim & has respect for his religion. He believes that Muslims are genuinely good people & that the terrorists who claim to be Muslim are using just his religion for their own evil agendas. Queen Rania also believes this.

QuoteKing Abdullah of Jordan to start visit to US tomorrow

His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan will begin a visit to the United States tomorrow, 30 January.

He will be the first Arab leader to meet the new Trump administration. It is unknown if he will meet the President while he is in the country.

The Jordanian embassy said on Thursday, "HM King Abdullah II will start a working visit to U.S. on Monday during which he will meet [with the] new administration & Congress."

I admire Queen Rania's life long dedication to ensuring sure all children in Jordan receive a quality education. She has worked very hard for years to make education a reality especially for disadvantaged girls. Because of her, Jordan is more successful. I think she, Queen Sofia & King Felipe all deserve Noble Prizes for their wonderful accomplishments.

QuoteQueen Rania Meets with Academics to Discuss Jordanian Education Reforms

As part of Queen Rania's lifelong commitments to the improvement of education and standards of living for the people of Jordan, Her Majesty has recently met with a number of high-profile academics and education experts to discuss efforts towards reforming and improving Jordanian educational standards.

A couple of decades ago Jordan was hailed in the region for its high standards of education, making the Kingdom the envy of its peers elsewhere in the realms of academics. However, in recent years their lofty position has started to decline, with the big question being raised by Queen Rania,"Why?"

Her Majesty suggested that there are most likely a number of factors behind the slump in standards, which can all be summed up with the sentiment that Jordan is just in a different place from ten years ago. The population of Jordan is much bigger than it was, the infrastructure is placed under pressure from refugees fleeing nearby conflict zones, and while Jordan is relatively unscathed by the regional conflict of the past decade, it has not been completely unaffected.

QuoteThe King of Jordan claims Turkish President has a hand in terrorism

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, "believes in a radical Islamic solution to the problems in the region and the fact that terrorists are going to Europe is part of Turkish policy, and Turkey keeps getting a slap on the hand, but they get off the hook", writes His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan in a leaked memo.

It is the British newspaper, The Guardian who published the memo from King Abdullah. The memo is around one-year-old, and much has happened since the King of Jordan claimed that Turkey sends terrorists to Europe as part of state policy. Jordanian embassies in London and Washington did not comment on the leaks.

The leaked memo indicates the US lawmakers were personally briefed by His Majesty King Abdullah in January 2016 about plans for Jordan's special forces to operate in Libya alongside with British SAS-troops. The memo also states that His Majesty met with US congressional leaders which include John McCain and speaker, Paul Ryan.

QuoteJordan's Princess Dina Mired working to combat smoking of youth in Armenia

Her Royal Highness, Princess Dina Mired of Jordan is in Armenia by invitation of the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU). Her Royal Highness is the newly appointed Chairwoman of the Union of International Cancer Control. She is a global advocate for Cancer Control and Non-Communicable Diseases.

She visited the Temple of Garni and Geghard monastery while there and was accompanied by YSMU Rector Armen Muradyan. She also enjoyed Armenian music and food.

The Princess told the Armenian News her thoughts on how Armenia is doing to fight the prevention of smoking in the country: "I must say that there is a really well-educated medical staff, the facilities, but we are here to assist Armenia to move forward in the field, and here that base exists. We will, of course, continue our cooperation; however, there is a question over which I and the YSMU Rector agree: Armenia must fight against cigarettes. The tobacco industry that receives money at the expense of people's health develops many bad ways through which it increases the number of consumers as much as possible. They target youth, make them as lifelong tobacco users. Our country, as well, still has to carry out works on this path, otherwise, no any healthcare ministry will be able to fight against the diseases caused by cigarettes in the future."

QuoteQueen Rania interviewed in the UK at Google Zeitgeist

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan was interviewed on Monday in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, on stage at the Google Zeitgeist.

The Queen spoke to the Executive Chairman of Alphabet Inc., Mr Eric Schmidt about the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, the popularity of populist parties, education in the Middle East and the backlash against Western globalisation.

Queen Rania has been a passionate advocate for the Syrian refugees fleeing their war-torn homeland. Speaking on this topic, she told Schmidt that the world must "stop thinking of refugees and migrants as a problem and accept the movement of people as the new norm, a by-product of our current global order." She added that the worldwide humanitarian response to such situations needs to be upgraded to fit with the "21st-century crises with innovative solutions."

It was lovely to see King Abdullah II, Queen Rania and their daughter, Princess Salma at the Independence Day celebrations! Princess Salma has grown into a wonderful young lady. She will go to college soon! I wonder if she is also going to Georgetown University like her two older siblings, Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Iman? I imagine so.

QuoteKing and Queen of Jordan attend Independence Day celebrations

Jordan celebrated its 71st anniversary since its independence from the British Commonwealth in 1946 on Thursday, 25 May 2017. As part of the celebrations regarding their nation's birth as a sovereign country, the King and Queen of Jordan hosted a celebration at Raghadan Palace. They were accompanied by their daughter Princess Salma and other members of the Jordanian Royal Family. As well as marking the birth of Jordan, Their Majesties also took the opportunity to highlight how far the kingdom had come since its inception, and how blessed its is to be possessed of such a stable and unified country in comparison to its neighbours.

As the Jordanian national anthem played, King Abdullah was greeted by a 21 gun salute from the artillery upon his approach to the palace to begin the festivities.

Jordan's remarkable rise was immortalised through music, dance and media throughout the event, being attended by a wide array of singers and entertainers from the region. Patriotic songs were sung by Lebanese singer Samira Tawfik and Jordanian singer Zain Awad, and a special opera performance was conducted by five-time winner of Arabs Got Talent Emmane Beasha, with accompaniment by the National Music Conservatory. The Jordanian choir Dozan Wa Awtar followed up with further patriotic anthems.

^^^My sincerest hope is that Jordan will remain a moderate nation that is respectful of its traditions but is open to working with its neighbors including Israel. I don't know if the country will remain a monarchy, but if Hussein eventually inherits the throne during a peaceful period for the region, then his grandfather and father can be pleased that their work has paid off.

Yes I do wonder if families are already trying to promote their daughters as a potential bride for Hussein? :crazylove:

The turmoil in the region has directly impacted the education of young children in the refugee-host countries like Jordan. These nations have had their education systems strained due to the influx of refugee students.

King Abdullah directs government to reopen schools ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/east/jordan/king-abdullah-directs-government-to-reopen-schools-154692/)

QuoteOn Tuesday, King Abdullah of Jordan directed the government to reopen schools and various sectors in a systematic manner that safeguards public health and the national economy. This was announced by the Jordanian government in a press release late Tuesday evening. King Abdullah of Jordan attended a meeting together with his son Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II with the National Policies Council on Tuesday and stressed that public health has been the top priority since the outbreak of COVID-19.

On 2 March 2020, the Ministry of Health confirmed the first case in Jordan. As of 9 January 2021, 305.000 Jordanians have been infected with COVID-19 of whom 3.989 have died.

During the meeting, His Majesty said compliance with public safety measures must continue to maintain improvement in the epidemiological situation and facilitate the reopening of various sectors. Also during the meeting, the King was briefed by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh and the concerned officials on the latest developments and the measures taken to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interesting and it's good to see that Abdullah seems to still have a good relationship with his uncle Hassan. For years the late King Hussein had designated his brother Hassan as Crown Prince when his son Abdullah was too young to have taken on the role of CP. Prior to his death, Hussein then removed Hassan as CP and reinstated Abdullah. Hassan and his wife were often on soft diplomacy trips for Hussein and later Abdullah.

King Abdullah opens new military University College ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/east/jordan/king-abdullah-opens-new-military-university-college-155371/)

QuoteHis Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan opened on the new RJAF Technical University College for Aviation Sciences. The building will be a part of the King Hussein Air College. The Jordanian monarch is the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army.

King Abdullah was received by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti and the RJAF commander. Following a briefing on the college, King Abdullah congratulated the top graduates of the college?s air traffic control and navigation program. His Majesty also inaugurated a renewable energy project at the King Hussein Air College, which is one of the biggest public sector energy projects in the Kingdom, supplying the power grid with a total of 22,000 gigawatts annually.

King Hussein Air College began admitting students in 2015 and awards bachelor?s degrees in the fields of aviation, air traffic control and navigation. The college will launch additional specialisations this year in aircraft maintenance technology, aviation safety, and aviation management to meet local and regional market demand. King Hussein Air College is located at the King Hussein Air Base, 3 kilometres north of the city of Mafraq, north in Jordan, close to the Syrian border.

It is expected that the Jordanian royal family will now gradually step up their activities, as the vaccination process for Covid-19 is relatively fast in the country. Just a few weeks ago, the King ordered the reopening of the country?s schools and Jordan will now gradually reopen the community.

Queen Rania: ?We are all in a race against a pandemic, not against each other? ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/east/jordan/queen-rania-we-are-all-in-a-race-against-a-pandemic-not-against-each-other-155561/)

QuoteOn Saturday, Queen Rania of Jordan spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccine at the virtual Warwick Economics Summit. The Queen called on equality in distributing vaccines for the coronavirus during her talk with CNN news anchor Becky Anderson.

The Queen said: ?We are all in a race against a pandemic, not against each other.? She meant that if one country is unable to recover from the pandemic, it will impact the world as a whole. Wealthy countries have been able to order enough vaccines to vaccinate double their populations, but underdeveloped countries are struggling to be able to vaccinate just a small portion of their population. Jordan is the only country to distribute vaccines to refugees.

She called on those countries with a surplus of vaccines to donate them to poorer nations: ?I see no reason why those who have excess supply can?t donate their surplus to poorer countries, and I?m glad that some countries have committed to doing just that. If we aren?t motivated by moral or ethical responsibility, then at least we should be motivated to act from a global health standpoint.?

Her Majesty went on to talk about the cracks the pandemic has shown in our world: ?This pandemic has revealed and reinforced cracks in our world order, along lines of income inequality, gender inequity, and social injustice?this loss hasn?t been felt equally.

It's getting worse as King Abdullah's half-brother Prince Hamzah (the former Crown Prince) is now under house arrest.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56626370
Quoten the video recorded on Saturday, he says: "I had a visit from the chief of general staff of the Jordanian armed forces this morning in which he informed me that I was not allowed to go out, to communicate with people or to meet with them because in the meetings that I had been present in - or on social media relating to visits that I had made - there had been criticism of the government or the king."

He says he was not accused of making the criticisms himself.

However, he went on to say: "I am not the person responsible for the breakdown in governance, the corruption and for the incompetence that has been prevalent in our governing structure for the last 15 to 20 years and has been getting worse... And I am not responsible for the lack of faith people have in their institutions.

"It has reached a point where no one is able to speak or express opinion on anything without being bullied, arrested, harassed and threatened."

High level political arrests are rare in Jordan, a key US ally in the Middle East.

    Prince Hamzah's message in full

The country has a powerful intelligence agency that has been granted new powers since the coronavirus pandemic, which has drawn criticism from rights groups.

Egypt, the US and the Saudi Royal Court have expressed support for King Abdullah.

This is being referred to as a "coup."

The late King Hussein faced many issues when it came to his successor and IMHO the fact that he had many sons by three different wives didn't make it easier.  First it was Abdullah as CP from birth  but he was replaced by his uncle Hazzan in the 1960's due to the constant assassination threats and attempts on his elder brother. Later Hazzan was removed while Hussein was receiving treatment for cancer and replaced again by Abdullah. Abdullah though had almost no preparation over the years and had limited use of Arabic when he ascended to the throne. On his deathbed, Hussein wanted Hamzah (his eldest son with Noor) named as Abdullah's heir even though he already had a son. Hamazah was CP for some years, but then later replaced by his nephew Hussein (Abdullah and Rania's eldest son.)

A coup attempt with one family member supporting you, mad. The very idea, if people were into it, would be supported by the military in whole, firstly.

King Abdullah's personal finances are reviewed in this article about the Pandora Papers.

King of Jordan hidden property empire worth more than $100m, Pandora papers reveal | King Abdullah | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2021/oct/03/king-of-jordan-hidden-property-empire-worth-more-than-100m-pandora-papers-reveal)

QuoteJordanian security forces arrived unexpectedly at Moayyad al-Majali?s home one day in October 2019, detaining the lawyer, confiscating his laptop and phones and accusing him of one of the kingdom?s most serious offences.

His crime was slandering the country?s ruler, King Abdullah II, simply by asking a single question: how much land does the king own?

In a country propped up by billions of dollars in international financial aid ? and where unemployment has nearly doubled over the past seven years ? the topic is considered too sensitive for the Jordanian public to know about.

But today, the Guardian can reveal part of the answer, thanks to documents that form the Pandora papers, the largest ever trove of leaked offshore data.

The files expose that the Arab world?s longest-serving current monarch has spent the past decades amassing an international luxury property empire worth well in excess of $100m (?74m), with its footprint stretching from the clifftops of Malibu, California, to Washington DC and on to central London?s most exclusive postcodes.

Abdullah built this property empire showing the same zeal for secrecy he has demonstrated when asked about his finances at home. He has disguised his ownership through a series of offshore companies incorporated in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) , according to records shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists with the Guardian, the BBC and other media outlets around the world.

The multimillion-dollar properties were acquired as US economic and military aid to Jordan quadrupled and Jordanian citizens were subjected to austerity as part of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout for the resource-poor country.

King receives letter from Prince Hamzah | Royal Hashemite Court (https://rhc.jo/en/media/news/king-receives-letter-prince-hamzah)

QuoteHis Majesty King Abdullah II received an apology letter from His Royal Highness Prince Hamzah bin Al Hussein earlier this week.

In the letter, Prince Hamzah acknowledged that Jordan had witnessed trying circumstances and a regrettable chapter in its history last year, which the country overcame, guided by His Majesty?s wisdom, patience, and tolerance.

The King had entrusted His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal last April to lead efforts within the family to deal with the role of Prince Hamzah in connection with last year?s sedition case.

At the time, Prince Hamzah pledged to Prince El Hassan and a number of Royal family members to commit to the Constitution and the legacy of the Hashemite Family, and has since remained at his palace with his family, under the care of His Majesty.

The prince said in his letter earlier this week, that the past months had afforded him the opportunity for self-reflection and compelled him to write to His Majesty, the elder brother, expressing his hope to turn the page on that chapter in the country?s and the family?s history.

The letter followed a meeting between His Majesty and Prince Hamzah on Sunday evening at the prince?s request, in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Feisal bin Al Hussein and Prince Ali bin Al Hussein.

Prince Hamzah recognised that he had erred, and took responsibility for his actions and offences towards Jordan and His Majesty over the past years, including the incidents that followed in the sedition case.

In his letter, the prince sought His Majesty?s forgiveness, apologising to the King and the Jordanian people for his actions, which he vowed will not recur.

Queen Rania has Iftar with women from Al Karak ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/east/jordan/queen-rania-has-iftar-with-women-from-al-karak-174967/)

QuoteQueen Rania of Jordan has had Iftar with women from Al Karak during Ramadan.

The Queen of Jordan travelled to the Al Karak Governate on 5 April to take part in Iftar (meal eaten after sunset by Muslims during Ramadan) and show her support for the women and their contributions to society.

Women active in education, social welfare, culture, volunteer work, and charitable efforts joined Her Majesty at Karak Castle for the meal eaten after sunset when Muslims break their fast. The Queen spoke about the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to the women and her wishes for them, especially now that families can gather together once again.

Queen Rania said: ?I am very happy to be here during the first week of Ramadan, surrounded by my sisters, the devoted women of Al Karak. Ramadan is always a month of goodwill, blessings, and reconnecting with loved ones, but this year it feels even more special than usual ? perhaps because we have been unable to get together for Iftar like this for the past two years.?

I really don?t know why King Abdullah should speak English with an American accent! He may have gone to college in the US but his mother was English wasn?t she (may be muddling people up) and K Hussein went to school in England and to Sandhurst. Royals? accent in English do intrigue me.

Constantine of Greece, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Daisy are of course older and speak with cut glass upperclass English accents, but some younger ones like Cr Prss Victoria and King Felipe do seem to me to speak American when they make speeches in the English language. Albert of Monaco of course I do except due to Prss Grace.

@Curryong-Yes it is a bit of a mystery but to me he sounds more American even though logically I believe that he should have a British accent. Especially since his mother and grandfather  were English. His father attended school in the UK so that should have influenced him.

I have to agree that there is definitely a generational gap when it comes to foreign royals speaking English. I have to wonder if the American influence on the younger generation  was due to them watching American TV and movies?

Maybe but I think it?s more that they often polished and perfected their English at American colleges. Even though the Princess of Belgium and the Netherlands and Spain have been respectively at Oxford and in Wales recently!
