QuoteThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived in Australia's Blue Mountains this morning to visit people who lost their homes in catastrophic bush fires which swept through the region six months ago.

Dressed in a bold print dress and wearing wedge heels, Kate, 32, clambered out of a helicopter with her husband at her side just after 11am local time.

It is the Royal couple's first full day in Australia after arriving from New Zealand yesterday afternoon. Today's schedule includes spending time in the village of Winmalee with those whose lives were devastated by the fires. They were then go on to view the Three Sisters - a rock formation which is one of the area's biggest tourist attractions - before returning to Sydney this afternoon.

Blue Mountains residents have been waiting to see the Duke and Duchess since early this morning.

Jennie Hall, who lost everything but the 'daggy garden pants' and old shirt she was wearing last October 17, said the royal couple's visit was 'very meaningful' for the still-devastated community.

'It's an acknowledgement of what we went through to have William and Kate come to our part of the world and shine a light on what happened here,' said Mrs Hall.

'Over 200 houses went up in the space of 20 minutes. The temperatures were 1,600 degrees in the middle of it. I had molten aluminium left in my house. I lost everything - except I got my dogs out - so for the duke and duchess to come here and by doing that show to the world what we are still going through, that's a big thing for us.'

Prince William and Kate's Australian tour diary: Day 2

QuoteDAY 2 of our Royal Diary, Wills-and-Kate-watchers, and the Royal couple are spending the day in the Blue Mountains following yesterday's arrival in Sydney.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — we're all friends here, readers, so let's refer to them as William and Kate from hereon in — have spent the first part of their visit meeting with residents and first responders recovering from last year's bushfires in the region.

No sign of young Prince George, who it seems is staying in Sydney for the day while his parents visit the region.

QuoteIt is one of Australia's most outstanding areas of natural beauty.

But when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived for their last engagement of the day in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, William managed to strike fear into onlookers by standing dangerously close to the edge of a huge cliff.

The Duke boldly stood just 18 inches from the edge of Narrow Neck Lookout, a stunning viewpoint in the mountains which were devastated by bushfires six months ago.

As they watched youngsters on an adventure training course abseil down the cliff, the Duke stepped right up to the edge to look down into the Jamieson Valley below.

Showing no fear, he peered over the edge as the Duchess stayed firmly where she was - a police officer in a safety harness standing next to her.

Damian Cooper, manager of the Mountain Youth Services Team, said: 'I think he made everyone a bit nervous. He took a step over and took a look down.

'I had a brief moment there. He did not seem intimidated by the edge or the height at all.'

Tim Williams, of the Blue Mountains Adventure Company, said: 'He was calm on the edge. He didn't worry about the safety briefing to stay a distance back. He just stepped up to have a cool look over. It's just his military training, I guess.'

QuoteAustralia Royal Visit: Day Ten

The Duke of Cambridge has praised Australians and their nation as a "beacon of confidence" as thousands turned out to greet Their Royal Highnesses.

The Duke and Duchess were cheered by well-wishers during a visit to Sydney's iconic Opera House for a reception to mark the start of their 10-day tour of Australia.

They went on a walkabout around the steps of the famous building greeting the crowds who stood five deep in places. The Duke and Duchess had flown to the east coast city after completing a tour of New Zealand with their baby son Prince George.

In a speech at the reception, The Duke said that he and his wife had been looking forward to the visit for a long time and how The Queen held the nation in high affection.

QuoteA Speech by The Duke of Cambridge at the Sydney Opera House

Thank you for your warm welcome.

Your Excellency, Sir Nicholas, Mr President, thank you for inviting me and Catherine this afternoon.  There cannot be a more impressive place than the iconic Sydney Opera House to begin our first visit together to Australia.  I know that New South Wales is a very special place, and Catherine and I are looking forward to seeing that for ourselves over the coming days.

My last visit to Australia – in 2011 – was at a sad and testing time for the nation.  A cyclone followed by flooding had devastated lives and property in Queensland, and bush fires had ravaged the State of Victoria.  I am sorry to return to find that, yet again, fellow Australians in north Queensland are coping with the aftermath of another destructive cyclone.

Australia has much to contend with at the moment: your contribution to the ongoing search for MH370 has earned respect in every quarter of the globe.  Australia’s determined and leading role in the search is at the very edge of technological ability and human endurance.

QuoteDay Eleven: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit the Blue Mountains (Storify)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge carried on their tour of Australia with a visit to the Blue Mountains today, where they met residents and emergency workers who had been affected by the tragic bush fires in 2013.

Arriving in Winmalee, their first stop was to visit the Winmalee Guide Hall, where they had lunch with people from the community before planting a tree with the Winmalee Girl Guides.

The Duke of Cambridge spoke yesterday about how he and The Duchess had been looking forward to visiting Australia for a long time and how his grandmother The Queen holds the nation in high affection.

QuoteWilliam and Kate Geta Rockstar Welcome as Thousands Turn Out at Sydney Harbour

There were parrots, princes and potential princesses lining the Sydney Harbour foreshore on Thursday afternoon as thousands huddled in the shadow of the Opera House for a glimpse of the most popular royal couple in decades.

Sunny skies greeted their arrival as a flashing motorcade wound its way down Sydney's Macquarie Street and to a glistening Sydney Harbour. A widely-grinning Kate wore a bright yellow number. William seemed delighted by the sunshine, saying: 'I should have brought my sunglasses.' Prince George rested up with his nanny.

As the couple, minus their bouncing bub, peeled through the crowd, screams erupted willing Kate to turn around for a picture. William touched Kate's hand, ushering his wife to give a wave. She obliged and the cheers were deafening.

Their rockstar-like welcome came amid news that support for the monarchy in Australia is at an all-time high, with only 42 per cent surveyed in favour of a republic.

What, no Kate so no fashion critique in the DM?  Who designed William's clothes? Who did William's hair? How many minutes did it take for William's shoes to sell out? Did William have a Marilyn Moment at the meeting?  :happy17:

William and Kate tour town ravaged by bushfires

QuoteSurvivors of last year's devastating Australian bushfires met with Prince William and his wife Kate on Thursday as the royal couple visited the Blue Mountains.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are on a three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand with their baby son George, met some who lost everything in the fires which destroyed more than 200 homes.

"For them to come out all this way to say hello and say, 'I'm sorry this happened to you' ... it didn't seem like duty to them, it seemed like a pleasure," said Eartha Odell.

The Royal couple visit Winmalee in New South Wales, a community badly affected by fierce blazes last year.

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge made his protection officers' hearts skip a beat when he stepped perilously close to the edge of a steep cliff during a tour of the Blue Mountains in Australia.

Without warning William walked to the edge of the narrow ledge he was standing on with his wife as they watched a display of abseiling.

As he peered over the sheer drop an alarmed-looking Kate reached out her arms, before giggling as he stepped back to safety.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been at each other's sides throughout their royal tour, but Kate left Prince William to meet Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott by himself this afternoon.

Royal visit: Prince William, Kate to visit Bear Cottage children's hospice in Sydney

QuoteThe Royal couple will spend the third day of their Australian tour in Sydney, visiting The Royal Easter Show and the Bear Cottage children's hospice in Manly.

Their visit to Bear Cottage is designed to raise awareness of the children's hospice, which is the only one of its kind in New South Wales and one of only two in Australia.

The hospice provides medical and end-of-life care to children suffering from life-limiting illnesses.
