QuoteBuckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and other residences including the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and Clarence House have seen a 6.6 per cent rise in visitor numbers, according to the annual report of the Royal Collection Trust.  Income increased by 8.2 per cent to £54.99 million.

The trust, which uses income from tourists to maintain the Queen's art collection and other treasures held in trust for the nation by the monarch, also makes a contribution to maintaining the occupied royal palaces.

In the past year, it has paid £4.4 million to the Royal Household as a fee for opening Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to the public, helping to maintain and refurbish the sovereign's palaces.

Palace officials have overseen a boom in visitor numbers, particularly at Buckingham Palace, in the last three years amid heightened interest in the monarchy after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding in 2011 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Don't tell 'republicans'. They like to believe the Royals aren't good for tourism.

Should also extend to those who have businesses that cater to tourists in the immediate area of the palaces.

The royals are not the only or even the main reason tourists go to Britain.
"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to your children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female'." I have to agree with you Macrobug. The royal palaces occupied or not,  along with stately manors ie:Blenheim are familiar to those of us who love UK television and film productions and tourists want to visit them. My father especially has enjoyed visiting the old castles like Warwick and then comparing them to the relatively newer palaces.
