QuoteAustralians are attending dawn services around the country to commemorate Anzac Day and honour the men and women who have fought and died in war.

The services mark the 99th anniversary of the first landings by Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in 1915.

More than 35,000 people are expected at today's national ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge will be the first Royals to attend an Anzac Day service in Canberra since the Queen and Prince Philip in 1970

QuoteTHE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were up at dawn today to take part in a solemn act of remembrance for the fallen in Australia.

The couple made a previously-unannounced appearance in the darkness at the early service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberr, watched by tens of thousands there.

With the memorial building lit up behind them, William and Kate quietly arrived at around 5am, the beginning of ANZAC day, the nation's special day of remembrance.

Kate, 32, in a cream scarf and black coat and black leather gloves, stood beside  William, her hands clasped in front of her as they listened to  early readings which had started before they arrived.

Pinned on his coat, William, 31, wore his two medals given for service to his grandmother the Queen marking her Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

QuoteThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have begun the final day of their royal tour Down Under on Australia's most significant anniversary, Anzac Day.

On a cold dark morning, they made a surprise appearance at a dawn service at Canberra's War Memorial.

A royal source said they both felt it was appropriate they should be there.

William and Kate wanted to be part of the special day which is regarded as a sacred commemoration in Australian and New Zealand, when fallen soldiers are remembered in sombre ceremonies, old soldiers march down the streets to wildly cheering crowds.

The royal couple stood next to Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lynne Cosgrove at the service, with the Duchess rugging up in a scarf.

So true, prevented it from becoming a circus. It was a nice thing to do. And, Kate has been uncharacteristically and appropriately respectful at such events in Oz, no playing with her hair or laughing as we have seen on British Remembrance events...

Just chatted with some Australian posters on another forum. Apparently people show up at dawn all over both nations at their RSLs (Returned and Service League) to honor the war dead and the veterans of the conflicts.

A very lovely service and I agree that it was best for them to arrive at dawn unannounced.

QuoteA Speech by The Duke of Cambridge at Parliament House, Canberra

Prime Minister, Mr President, Madam Speaker, Chief Justice, Leader of the Opposition, Ministers and Members of Parliament, members of the Diplomatic Corps, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen – thank you for your truly warm welcome.

When Catherine and I arrived in Sydney last week, I said how much we had been looking forward to this visit.  Drawing on my own experience, I told Catherine that it would be wonderful, and so it has been.  Anticipation has become deep admiration.

There is so much to admire about Australia.  Catherine and I acknowledge the timeless values of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  They have been the custodians of this ancient and majestic continent for thousands of years.  The Traditional Owners' stories, and the magnificent and moving rock art at Uluru, which we saw for ourselves, are a priceless inheritance.  They tell us not just about the past but provide a precious vision for the future.

Catherine and I had the privilege earlier this week of visiting Sydney's Taronga Zoo, which is committed – through conservation – to just such custodianship.  And I know, too, how important Australian support has been for the global consortium, United for Wildlife, which is fighting the scourge of the illegal trade in wildlife, and poaching, something very close to my heart.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have risen before dawn to remember Australia's war dead on the last day of their tour Down Under.

The couple made an unannounced appearance at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra at around 5am local time (8pm UK time) for a service marking Anzac Day - a national day of remembrance for the nation's fallen, veterans and those still serving.

QuoteDuke and Duchess Turn Hearts and Heads in Canberra Sunshine

Kirby Turnbull had been waiting weeks to flirt with Prince William.  And on a sunny Thursday morning in Canberra, the Black Mountain School student, who has cerebral palsy, got her opportunity when she met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the National Arboretum.

As the duchess appeared in a green knee-length dress and accepted flowers, Turnbull gave William a silk tie made by her class and a scarf for Kate.

"Thank you very much. That's very kind," he said.  The 18-year-old giggled.

The girls' pastoral care teacher, Sarah Desmond, said Turnbull had been up at 6am laughing in anticipation and had been planning to tell the duke she likes flirting with boys, and him in particular.

QuoteKate and William Attend Remembrance Services in Canberra  (Video)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today honoured Australia and New Zealand's war dead as they attended a service of remembrance in Canberra on Anzac Day.

As tens of thousands of people across the two nations came to a standstill, Kate and William watched the traditional march which included Australia's four surviving Victoria Cross recipients.

They had already made a surprise appearance at a dawn service in the Australian capital on the final day of their tour.  The royal couple wanted to be part of the ceremony which is regarded as a sacred commemoration in Australian and New Zealand, when fallen soldiers are remembered in sombre ceremonies, old soldiers march down the streets to wildly cheering crowds.

QuoteTony Abbott, the Prime Minister of Australia, pronounced it one of the all-time great royal tours, and as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge set course for home today they will reflect on a job well done over the past three weeks.

The royal couple and their son Prince George left Australia and New Zealand with many memorable moments that will stay with those who witnessed them for the rest of their lives.

The tour not only cemented the two Commonwealth realms' affection for Prince William, but also introduced the Duchess of Cambridge and nine-month-old George to the countries, both of which appear to have taken them to their hearts.

QuoteForgotten footage shot by British Pathé in 1915 reveals the Duchess of Cambridge's great-great-grandfather inspecting long lines of troops in Leeds, just as the Royal couple had a similar engagement at the national Anzac Day ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra yesterday.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge joined VC winners and other dignitaries to commemorate Anzac Day at the end of their tour Down Under, paying their respects to all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who gave their lives in wars and conflicts.
The scenes were echoed by newly-rediscovered footage almost a century old from British Pathé. In the clip the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Sir Charles Lupton (the great-great-great-uncle of the Duchess of Cambridge), can be seen paying a visit to the Leeds Pals Battalion in a camp near Colsterdale in the Yorkshire Dales.
