Sir Frederick Ponsonby, King George V's Keeper of the Privy Purse, had advised Edward, The Prince of Wales:     
'The Monarchy must always retain an element of mystery. A Prince should not show himself too much. The Monarchy must remain on a pedestal.'

^ It was a variation of the famous constitutionalist Walter Bageshot's dictum to 'not let the daylight in on the magic' (of monarchy.) He wrote that in Victoria's reign but that  genie is well and truly out of the bottle!
