As a way of supporting the war effort of the Second World War, King George VI of Great Britain established the George Cross.
The George Cross was awarded for acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in extreme danger situations.

^King George announced its creation at the time of the Blitz in 1940, when a lot of civilians were risking their lives in helping others. Later on in the war the entire island of Malta received it after suffering terrible bombardment from Nazi and Italian planes. It inspired a lot of silly jokes to this day about 'What makes a Maltese cross?'
