Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester | Unofficial Royalty

Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott was born on December 25, 1901 at Montagu House in Whitehall, London, England. She was the third daughter and the fifth of eight children of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch and 9th Duke of Queensberry and Lady Margaret Bridgeman, daughter of George Bridgeman, 4th Earl of Bradford.  Alice's father was the largest landowner in Scotland, and she was a descendant of King Charles II through an illegitimate line.

Alice was a very talented artist. She painted to finance lots of trip to Kenya, which she fell in love with on her first visit. She was a mature bride as she didn't marry until she was in her thirties and somehow I don't think Harry Gloucester was her ideal man! She seemed quite resigned to being married by the time she we'd as she remarked she had had 'a decent run'.

I hadn't known that information about Alice. Do you know if any of her work is exhibited?

No, all I know is that she was regarded as a talented water-colourist. She loved Kenya and painted landscapes of ithe scenery there. Then she would come back to Britain and sell them at a Bond St art gallery to finance her next trip. I read a biography of hers ages ago and it had some paintings of hers in it. She was quite an interesting character, but married to a very bovine man.

She wrote her autobiography, Memoirs of Princess Alice, it can be bought at Amazon.  I read it years ago and was struck with how how nice she was and how adventurous.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were present this evening at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present.

Two dedicated table tennis volunteers have been honoured with a prestigious Torch Trophy Award, presented by the Duke of Gloucester.

Bev Scott-Johns of New Milton TTC in Dorset and Vernon Hughes from Yatton Keynell in Wiltshire, both attended an awards dinner in London this week.

The Torch Trophy Trust was established in 1962 to support and recognise the outstanding achievements of volunteers in sport.
