QuoteThe Duchess of Cambridge to visit Farms for City Children

The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Farms for City Children on 3 May to see their work with giving young people from the city a chance to spend a week on a real working farm. Her Royal Highness will join a group of pupils and teachers in mucking in around the farm.

Her Royal Highness will join a group of students and teachers in mucking in around the farm. The organisation was founded by children's author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare in 1976, and the Duchess will meet with them. The organisation offers children from all over the country an intense "learning through doing" experience. They learn just exactly where their food comes from, and they have a chance to explore the outside world. The organisation currently has three working farms and welcomes around 3,200 children and 400 teachers every year. The children gain social and emotional development through teamwork and build self-worth through the work and the completion of tasks.

Her Royal Highness will begin her visit with a briefing about the farm. She will then join a storytime session led by Michael Morpurgo. Afterwards, she will join the children as they work on the farm, tending to pigs, sheep and chickens as required. The visit will end with a short tea party, where Her Royal Highness will meet with volunteers, staff and trustees.

QuoteThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge keep farm animals: find out which ones!

Prince William and Kate are the proud owners of a pet dog, a Cocker Spaniel named Lupo, while their young children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte share a pet hamster called Marvin. But on Wednesday, Kate revealed that there are even more animals living in the Cambridge household. While out on a royal engagement to a farm in Gloucestershire, the Duchess disclosed that the family keep five chickens at their home, Anmer Hall in Norfolk, telling schoolchildren that plucks fresh eggs from their henhouse. During her visit, the Duchess, 35, was more than happy to get stuck in, proving to be a natural with the animals and completing work around the farm yard with the children. She made her way from allotment to allotment, tending to the pigs, chickens and in particular the sheep, which she affectionately referred to as "lambies."

The Duchess was also shown around the farm by children's author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare, who run the charity Farms For City Children. The couple set up the charity with the aim of giving children from the city the chance to spend a week on a real-working farm. During the engagement, Kate and the kids were treated to a storytelling session by Michael, author of War Horse and Kensuke's Kingdom. One of the charity's mission is to promote literacy and storytelling, as well as to give children an understanding of farming, the countryside and food production.
