As Queen, Marie Amelie tried to support the Church as much as she could, patronizing religious and charitable institutions.
As a child Marie Amelie's mother and aunt, Marie Antoinette, arranged for her engagement to Marie Antoinette's son, Louis Joseph, Dauphin of France. The Dauphin died in 1789.

While in exile Marie Amalie encountered her future husband, Louis Philippe d'Orleans. They were married in 1809.
During the first years of her marriage, Marie Amalie and Louis Philippe lived under British protection in Palermo, in a palace given to them by her father, the Palazzo Orleans.
