^ Prince Arthur of Connaught and Alexandra Fife were first cousins once removed and married in October 1913. Their only child, a son Alistair, succeeded to the Dukedom after his grandfather's death during the Second World War. Arthur died in 1938 and so predeceased his father.

Alistair was a very strange individual who may or may not have had a substance abuse problem. He was in the army and was shuffled off to Canada during the war after being hospitalised in Cairo, so the Athlones could look after him. (The Earl of Athlone was GG in Canada at the time.) The Athlones weren't happy about it.

However, in the icy winter of 1943 Alistair was found lying naked dead on the snow in front of an open window. Whether he'd thrown himself out or had toppled out (which was more likely) his death was kind of hushed up. That was the end of the direct line of Connaughts, though his cousin inherited most of his titles.

@Curryong-Was his sister the princess that married the heir to the Swedish throne?

Princess Margaret of Connaught yes, married the king of Sweden and have 5 children, After her death, he married Lady Louise Mountbatten.. Mountbatten's sister.  His other sister Patricia married a commoner and gave e up her title

^ Victoria's son Arthur Duke of Connaught married Princess Louise of Prussia, who was the daughter of Prince Frederik of Prussia, in 1879. Louise's father was an absolute pig, who boxed his wife's ears when she was resting after childbirth because she had the temerity to give him a daughter instead of a son. A son was born after four daughters but you can imagine what sort of a household Louise grew up in. Victoria wondered whether Arthur was marrying  Louise because he felt sorry for her, but they were happy for many years.

Arthur and Louise had three children, Arthur the only son and Margaret (Daisy) and Patricia (Patsy) who eventually gave up her title of Princess and became Lady Ramsay. The Connaught sisters were always called great beauties. I don't know whether that's so but Daisy was certainly pretty.

When Margaret married Gustav Adolf in 1905 it was a Will/ Kate situation, as his grandfather was King. Kings of Sweden have all been very long lived in modern times. Gustav was Duke of Skane when he married, as his father was Crown Prince. He came to the throne in 1907 and Gustav and Margaret then became Crown Prince and Princess. She never got to be Queen as she died as a result of a mastoid operation in 1920 and her unborn child (her sixth) died with her. She was aunt to the ill fated Alistair, as he was Arthur junior's only child.

It is interesting that Prince Arthur is the grandson of Queen Victoria and that his spouse Princess Alexandra is the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

^ Yes, they were first cousins once removed. Quite a number of Victoria's descendants married each other, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and if you add the descendants of Queen Alexandra's parents into the mix (King Christian IX of Denmark and Queen Louise) whose children and grandchildren also began dynasties and married into them, it all becomes very convoluted.

Queen Louise apparently always carried a card stating that she was the Queen of Sweden just in case she was knocked unconscious and could not speak for herself.

And Gustav Adolf and Margaret's daughter Ingrid was later Queen Ingrid of Denmark and the mother of that nation's current reigning queen. :)

Yes I remember reading that... She sounds like a nice woman... as did the Counnaugt princesses

Princess Alexandra's brother Alastair Duff (styled Marquess of Macduff) was stillborn in 1890.
Do you think that Alexandra named her son Alastair after her brother, Alastair Duff?

As  I recall it was said that he death was accidental but kind of tactily accepted that it had been an accident caused by his being drunk?

Curryong

^Yes, Alistair was supposed to like a drink or three, and rumour had it, other substances. It's a bit odd though that although he had toppled out in the middle of the night he wasn't wearing pyjamas. Especially as in those days and in wartime few places had central heating or bedroom fires blazing, and so sleeping naked was not a common option.

amabel

True, esp in Canada, I'm sure no one would be roaming around naked if they weren't used to the cold of the winter.  Maybe he was partying (nudge nudge wink wink) had a heart attack or something?  And of course there would be a bit of hushing things up....
