Succession to the British throne - how did we get here?

UK ArmsIn the late 17th century, England was experiencing a revolution - the Glorious Revolution, in fact. The English monarch at the time was James II of England, a Catholic who was disliked for his religious tolerance and close ties to France (well, that's certainly understandable!).

King James II's 25 year old daughter, Mary, was the heir presumptive until the King's son was born in 1688. James Francis Edward Stuart was born in June of that year, surpassing the Protestant Mary in the line of succession. Now, because Catholics are obviously evil, the politicians of the time decided that a Roman Catholic dynasty was simply not acceptable.

UK Royal Succession Law Brought into the 21st Century

Coat of ArmsLawmakers in the UK made history today by voting unanimously to change the succession laws which have, until this time, only allowed a female to inherit the throne if she has no living brothers and no deceased brothers who left surviving legitimate descendants (referred to as male-preference primogeniture). The changes voted on today also include allowing members of the royal family to marry a Roman Catholic without giving up their position within the line of succession, and reforming the requirement for all descendants of George II to seek the consent of the monarch before being legally wed.

Queen Camilla

H.R.H. The Princess of Wales and Duchess of CornwallWhat a load of rubbish, the press has now hit a new low by publishing rubbish to sell their stories. All this 'I plan to make Camilla my Queen' is all rubbish, Prince Charles knows perfectly well that Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall (officially the Princess of Wales, yes people… she is the Princess of Wales if we go by the laws and conventions governing the Monarchy!) will be Queen once he ascends to the British and Commonwealth thrones, so there is no need for 'secret plots'.

All this nonsense of secret plots, meetings, etc, etc… are all untrue stories published by the press in a desperate attempt to make money; they sink lower and lower every day by publishing all this nonsense. I find it funny, they say this source said this, or that, or that this other secret inside source thinks this or that this will happen. Seriously people… Ah! Wait, I know… I will phone one these papers and make up a completely untrue and yet juicy story about Prince Andrew and say I am someone close to the Prince in order to make my story look somewhat credible.
